fly wheel help

I have a 69 383 4spd, the engine needs a lot of work. I have a late 70's 440 that is rebuilt. Can I use the 69 fly wheel with the late 70's 440? My dad thinks that they were balanced the different. Any help would be great.

not exactly sure of years, but around 72 440's went to external balance
383 was internal, so you will most likely need to find a flywheel for the 440.

now I have a question for all, Will a 400 fly work on a 72 up 440 ?

Fred,

I believe all low deck motors are internally balanced.

To answer the first fella's question, no, but if you can
find a Mopar savvy machine shop it can be rebalanced.

I went thru all of this when I put the 71 440 in the 67
and I'm sure I have the years and stuff somewhere.
I'll post more when I find it.

Thanks for the help, as it turns out my old man was correct once again. One of these days I'll stop questioning him.

400's for the most part are externally balanced as they have a cast crank. I have read some of the very early 4 speed 400's came with forged cranks and were internally balanced. My 450 has a forged crank and we used the original 383 flywheel. One bolt hole would not line up completely so had to egg it a little bit. It's a neutral balance flywheel so worked fine as it was although we did balance the engine since some slight changes were made elsewhere in the engine. :Thumbsup :Thumbsup

The flywheel will physically fit as mine did but if you have a cast crank it will have to be offset balanced. That can be done by drilling/milling some material out of the flywheel in the proper place.

All cast crank big blocks are externally balanced. All 400 were externally balanced via through the flywheel and harmonic balancer. All 383's to my knowledge have forged cranks and are internally balanced. 440's had forged cranks until about 72ish and then they used cast cranks. The latter cast crank 440's were all externally balanced so if you have a later one you will need an externally balanced balancer and flywheel. I am not sure if the low deck engines used the balancers as the tall deck engines, but I would guess they do.

I have located a flywheel, The crank on the 440 apears to be machined for a pilot bushing, but maybe not as deep as the hole in my 383, how do I know that the hole in the 440 is for a pilot bushingand was not just there for the crank manufacturing? Also, is there anything else that I'm not thinking of that I might come across intalling this 78' 440 in my 69' crew cab 4x4 with NP 435 t-case?

The hole in the end of the crank needs to be 29/32"dia. to accept the truck pilot bushing . As stated already a 400 flywheel is the ticket. I cant think of any stock 440 4speed truck applications...
