hey guys, i was reading on sweptline.com the other day, and i was wondering if anyone else had a little more information... id like to convert my manuals to a automatic... hell.. id even get the white steering wheel if it required

i think they said that the 61-68 had this option.. but i never heard them say anything about 69-71...

let me know if anyone has any more information

70-71 I know have the turn signals that turn off automatically

69 has them also.

My '71 and '69 have them.

Seems like my (white steering wheel) '68 sometimes does, but other times not...

the auto turn off is a plastic "notch" that when the steering wheel turns past it , it will release the notch from the main body and the turn signal will stop, when they get old they get brittle and sometimes break or too much dirt and clogs them, you'll have to open int up to find out.

i will open it up tonight and see what i find. i hope that i do... because right now it doesnt- i have my fingers crossed!

do you mean self canceling turn signals? my 63 had them originally. somebody put an after market turn signal switch that was mounted to the column. So I ended up getting a whole cam out of a 66 van that had the self canceling also, just to keep the self canceling....It was annoying making a turn, and the signals still going...made me feel like my truck was useless or old or something...I thought all cars had self canceling turn signals...

thats my deal... after driving my newer daily and then hopping into my truck my blinker will be on for 3 miles... my exhaust is too loud to hear that little "blink blink blink"

i didnt know if i could swap my '70 switch for something that would... thats what sweptline.com was saying... he even gave part numbers... BUT! i cant find them anywhere.... what years of sweptlines DID have the self canceling lights? maybe i can go from there? or maybe i need a new steering wheel....

yeah, to get the signal cam to work in my 63 from the 66, i had to "modify" the cancelers on my steering wheel. it was a plug and play otherwise

so... 66 had them?

ok...this is how i did mine...

my 63 had the infamous broken lever..so, before i got her, someone installed after market turn signals, and spliced the wiring all to hell...well, i found a 65 d200 with a mostly complete wiring harness, so i grabbed EVERYTHING...even the turn signal cam...I had a bad ground at my front turn signal, and didnt know it, not to mention the famous burnt connectors..so..i went back to the Pick a Part and found a 66 dodge VAN and a 71 dodge VAN. they were identical to each other.Remember that the 63 has a metal turn signal cam versus the plastic ones of the 65 and later (i believe, please dont quote me). So i pulled the 66 (closer to my year) and went home and installed it. Traced all of my wiring and found the source of my problem, which was the bad ground. Turns out that the 63 originally had self canceling, but i was anxious to get my truck back on the road, and didnt do the research i should have done........

the only mods i had to do were:

bend the knobs on the underside of the steering wheel towards the center slightly, otherwise every time i turned the wheel, the signals would turn ON automatically

i added a "spacer" where the spring would normally go under the wheel, because if i would tighten the wheel all the way down, it would push against the cam and make it difficult to engage the signals

AL, to clarify - you have a 70 that doesn't cancel?

If so... The cancel cam inside the column has two fingers that trip to turn it off.
They are broken off.

Switch shown below. I had the one out of my 70 recently when painting
the column. It looked identical to the one in my 69 Fury. I bought a repop
for the Fury from Hardens Muscle Car World for $50 last summer.
Year One and a few other places also sell these, but most are closer to $75.
You have to reuse the old plastic plug housing and feed the wires through
the column and insert the spades in the old plug housing.

One note: the originals hve a wheel in the end of the horn contact, the
repops don't. So you must thoroughly coat the ring on the wheel and the
contact with dielectric grease or there will be a dragging sound/feel.

One thing to add to this good info.There is a piece of steel wire that wraps around the base of the steering wheel,that triggers the "turnoff" switch. If it is missing or oriented wrong,your cancel wont work properly.

okay, i gotcha... i just dont understand why it doesnt click off why it doesnt... i sopose that it could have been tampered with. I spent my whole weekend working on a GOOD update for my build thread. (might i add, as soon as i take pictures)

My steering wheel has been replaced with a mexican style wooden rim "Indy 500" steering wheel... (almost looks like a chain link steering wheel but without the chainlink) could THAT cause it not to kick off?

Im trying to illiminate a whole lot of problems, but i have a severe case of ADD so im bouncing one is done :D HAHAHAHA

Yes, if the after market steering wheel didn't have the finger protruding down to
catch the fingers on the end of the cam, it would not engage the kick off mechanism.
