The higher you score on your ASVAB exam, the better your choices of your job will be.
I never studied, nor thought of it, but scored pretty well enough to have the pick of the litter anyways. I'm a hands-on type of guy, and working with my hands helped me out. I didn't score so well in the administrative section, however!

Another option, all though not the greatest, is job corps. Free room, food, clothes and education. depending on what you do is where you go. If you do basic auto and want to get more advanced training you will probably transfer to the center i am at now in clearfield utah for the u.a.w program. The united auto workers program will teach you about toyota, diesels, or auto body. When you complete your trade you gat a bonus of 950 dollars or so to help get you started, they help you find a job, and can even give you a living assistance if you will need it. just another option and my :2cents if the military isnt what you wanna do.

I "BECAME" an Army Reserve soldier over 5 years ago and I'm about to re-enlist. I'll go right along with everyone else and say the Military, is DEFENITELY not for everyone. There are a lot of ups and downs. I don't think you should let anyone persuade you that one branch is more significant or elite than another. Although they are very different from each other, they are all a proud service to be apart of.

That being said, as a heavy equipment operator I would recommend the Army Engineers as a good choice.
