New Truck - Checking in!

Post by GiS »

Hey everyone,

I've been spending the past few weeks on your website bringing myself up to speed and getting ready for my first Sweptline, managed to find what I think was a pretty clean one sitting in Washington and went through the steps to bring it back home to Canada.

1966 D100, Poly 318 w/ 3 speed .. I am told 76,000 original miles.

Given I have imported this vehicle, it's not as simple as just throwing a plate on it .. instead I need to go through the inspection process. I've started to chip away at small things and hope to be in a position to get it on the road in the next month or so,

So far I have done the following:
- Adjusted valve lash
- New plugs/wires and air filter
- New Alt and Battery
- Swapped to Electronic Ignition

This is my "to-do" list:
- New exhaust from manifolds back, going with a simple single 2.25" and Flowmaster 50 Series muffler
- Inspect front wheels bearings (inner/outer) and wheel bearing seals, check condition of front drum brakes, ideally they are OK
- Inspect rear wheel bearings and seals, check condition of rear drums, ideally they are OK. Change gear oil
- Quick oil change
- Inspect kingpins for any excessive "slop" .. cross my fingers that these are OK but given the armount of "crud" built up on the front i beam I would say these could be the original kingpins!

The above should basically cover me mechanically and should result in a nicely "re-freshed" truck ... from there I will need to deal with some of the small items, if anyone has some advice or guidance please don't hesitate to chime in but a few things I have noticed are,

- Interior door handle stripped out,
- Missing arm rests
- Horn disconnected at steering wheel or not working
- Missing wiper arms and wiper blades, motor seems to work good tho .. Just one speed right? Did these vehicles have a washer fluid provision?
- Front marker lights/signals need to be looked into .. not working right now,
- Missing pass side mirror
- Engine Temp and Fuel Gauge don't appear to be working ...
- HiBeam switch toggles on but won't toggle off?
- No interior light and no dash lights?

Anyways, sorry for the long winded intro .. thanks for having me!

:welcome Nice looking '66. Your list is pretty typical for these old trucks. All relatively easy to remedy. Just post question/wants in the appropriate sections and you will most likely get some help. Chris.:Thumbsup

Great truck!

- Missing wiper arms and wiper blades, motor seems to work good tho .. Just one speed right? Did these vehicles have a washer fluid provision?
--------------The washer reservoir was a bag hanging next to the battery.

- Missing pass side mirror
--------------I love the style of mirrors you have on it. Everyone wants the other small mirrors. I'd actually trade straight up for what you have (out of my extra parts pile)

- Engine Temp and Fuel Gauge don't appear to be working ...
-------------probably something to do with wiring behind the gauges or the fuel gauge is fried. It powers the temp gauge

- HiBeam switch toggles on but won't toggle off?
-------------try greasing it so it slides easier

- No interior light and no dash lights?
-------------interior light would have a switch, maybe headlight switch is bad?

Welcome to the site! :Thumbsup :welcome Desert Turquoise is one of my favorite
colors for these Sweptlines. :clap Your fuel / temp gauge problem could stem from
a faulty voltage limiter. This condition can potentially allow excessive current [over 5V]
to pass through your instrument cluster. :pale There is an easy home brewed limiter
you can make.

I put one in each of my Sweptlines a few years ago and have had zero issues.
There are plenty of folks here to help you whip this truck back into shape.
