How my day goes...

Post by Daddiojoe »

OK, so the D100 has eaten another battery--I've determined that it won't charge on the charger and the only draw on it is the very small amount the radio takes to keep time, etc. So I load up the kid and the battery in my 66 Barracuda to go to the parts store, get ready to go and the accelerator cable breaks. Not going anywhere until my wife gets home from work this evening.

:banghead

I suppose if I had any gumption I would have taken the battery out of the Barracuda. I was pretty tired by then.

Any tips on this? I've gone through three batteries from Advance Auto. I bought the Titanium level so they've replaced them for free, but this is ridiculous. Any time the truck sits for a couple of days, there's battery problems. I'm thinking maybe I'm not holding it down securely enough and all of that straight axle bouncing is breaking them up inside. I'd break the contacts inside the battery for my Sportster every year or so, it seemed.

Any thoughts would be appreciated...

Sounds like a short in the wiring somewhere causing a path to open. I had the same battery in my truck (straigh axle and Autozone battery) for close to 6 years of bouncing up and down roads, off road driving, jumping curbs and hills, and never disconnected a cell. There has to be a draw in your system somewhere, or there has to be a charging failure. How much is youralternator actually putting back into the battery? How about your battery ground cable, is it in good shape? I would find it very difficult to believe the batteries are going that bad that fast. If you take the battery out of the truck, will it charge then?... if so, the problem is in your truck wiring.
Thanks, Clint

man you got a drain somewhere. up till dave left the key on, the 66 was on the same battery for going on 5 years. so the bouncing doesnt make sence as mine saw a lot more bouncing and air time then i figure yours does. not to mention it was the cheap battery, not a good one.

pull the positive cable and hook a test light between it and the new battery. if the light comes on, then pull the fuses one at a time till it goes off. this will at least put you in the right circuit.

The only draw is from the radio--very slight to keep the clock running. I'm going to replace cables because they set me up with a big new battery that has side mounts.

The meter on my dash reads that the alternator is charging, and I've got one of those newer silver voltage regulators.

Thanks for the tips and hope this works,

I had a similar sounding charging problem in a 67 Polara 500 -- took me about a year and a half to find the problem, a short in the thru-firewall connector.
