CSS Dilemma
CSS Dilemma
Alright Guys I need some input !!! I've got two (2) 1966 CSS trucks I am planning on using to making one. One is the D200 Bubba Storey had and the second is a D100 Short Wide Box I found. The original plan was to take the ~50K documented miles 318 Poly and trans and all the other trinkets from the D200 and put in the Shorty. The thought process is to keep it year correct and true to it's original build as possible.
Here comes the dilemma.......... I now have in my posession a good running 440 which has twisted my thinkin.
Sooooooo.........do I stay period/year correct and continue with my original plan or drop the 440 in? Which direction would add the most value to the truck in your opinion as a buyer/collector? Or does it matter since neither are original to the truck?
I've already touched base with Ben and he had a great idea but I would like to hear what you guys think also.
Thanks,
Stoney

Re: CSS Dilemma
To me the shorty would be the toy. 440 came out in 66 so its kinda
period correct for a shorty.
More fun in the shorty. Keep the poly for the farm truck. If the shorty is an auto truck then nothing is harmed in the install.

Yeah, I think I see more original trucks bringing better money than modified. It may be because I don't care for modified trucks though......EarlKann wrote:Damn, two CSS trucks. Wish I could find a good one.![]()

Re: CSS Dilemma
People will generally pay more for all original. Custom trucks many times only appeal to the builder. However adding a 440 isn't radically customizing and many would prefer this engine to a 318.

Re: CSS Dilemma
Are both trucks rebuildable? If your looking at value, the matching numbers might be more valuable.
Re: CSS Dilemma
My intent regardless of the engine will be to retore it back to the factory look. The only thing anyone would see not standard for 1966 would be in the engine compartment. The Shorty is a dash shift auto so that will work well with the 440.
For those that are unfamiliar with the D200 it left the assembly line and went to Northern Indiana for the addition of a Camper built on to the frame. The camper has since been removed leaving the cab and frame. There is no plan for restoration of this truck only as a donor. It is an auto also with PS, gauges with tachometer and "Cool Comfort" under dash mounted AC. All that will be going in the Shorty since it looks to have no options. Again..........all year correct but not original to the truck. If the truck were to be sold this info would all be known up front as I am not trying to "forge" an original.
Again..........thanks for the input

Re: CSS Dilemma
Earl, Ive got two also. Both are CSS utes, the only 2 known. The 64 was customized with a 440. I would let it go for the right price - (I paid more than $5000 for the truck)EarlKann wrote:Damn, two CSS trucks. Wish I could find a good one.![]()

Here's a short video of the day I got it from the Viet Nam vet who built it and showed it in Nor Cal. The guy also has over 50 cats so he always looks under vehicles before moving them

Cool truck, but not my style.
In relation to the original posters question, I am not interested in PwrWgnDrvr's CSS ute because I'd rather have the period correct poly even if it weren't the original engine. I would like something street friendly and somewhat fuel efficient as I will be driving it to work often. Some people have a desire for more cubic inches, I'm just not one of them. I'm also not a fan of utilines or black, but that's just more personal preference.
I think that the engine choice should come down to what your plans are for the truck. If you are building for resale, the period correct parts are a better choice. If you are building for yourself to keep, then do what ever you prefer, it's your truck!

That's a sweety, I like the black and sounds healthy too. Meet you in the Gemco parking lot and we'll make a round or two on Main on Saturday night, then go have a Mel's burger. Earl, my 65 ute is bone stock, 318 poly, 727, factory black, NO ROT or rust pitting anywhere - shiny factory paint on the floors!

Re: CSS Dilemma
I just don't find small block V8's very exciting. I would swap in the 440 and make it look cosmetically like a year correct 413. More fun to drive (a lot more fun) and it will get much more attention at any car show. I wouldn't even think twice about it.

By the way..............Was the "Cool Comfort" AC factory installed or dealer installed?

Re: CSS Dilemma
Not true. Both 66 D200 HPP have "factory" air as they were ordered and delivered to the dealer with AC installed. Technically they were under dash unit installed off-line but it was installed by contractors of the mound road plant.soopernaut wrote:A/C wasn't a factory option until 68.Stoney wrote:By the way..............Was the "Cool Comfort" AC factory installed or dealer installed?

So do they have a SERT for the A/C? The 1st evidence I can find mentioned in any literature is for 68.CSS-Registry wrote:Not true. Re: CSS Dilemma
no. it was not included on the SERT.soopernaut wrote:

i think i have mentioned this before but you can not take the factory sales literature as the gospel for the model year. there were many options that a new truck buyer could order from the "factory" that was not listed in the catalog. many running changes were introduced and as such dealers who were informed of them could make them available to potential buyers.
both trucks had under dash units installed before delivery to the dealer and one of them is very well documented as having "factory" AC.
i have learned a long time ago never say never with these trucks (even if i say it never happened :)
