trailer winch question

Post by 712edf »

My car hauler has a front electric winch (8000lb cap). It has at least 75' of cable on it, it not more. I unspooled 3 trailer lenghts off and still had a layer to go.

My question is: Should I shorten the cable to approximately 40'? I cant imagine winching something from a greater distance up onto the trailer. Plus having less cable would slighty increase draw capacity in theory.

What lenghts cable do y'all have on your hauler winches?

you can use a block to double you line and increase the pull power,
can't do that with a short line

Good point!

Havent used it enough to encounter needing more power.

Thanks,

As soon as you shorten it you'll have to go recover a project or something that you can't quite reach with the short cable.

I try to run 50' on the winch so I can double-line past the end of the ramps, plus keep another length with an eye on one end and a hook on the other. Keep that coiled up for when you get those long pulls; it's kept the trailer and truck on solid ground on more than a couple of occasions.
