Gentlemen, as I started this post, I have a responsibility to help guide the content back to the subject proposed .
The intent was to comment on our truck hobby, and effect that government has on us as old vehicle owners.
I am a firm believer in freedom of speech, at the appropriate time and place. We have stretched it a bit, don't you think ?
Thanks guys.

My apologies for this one. My comments took this way off subject. But there is something very interesting in all of this. We all have different views on the problem, but agree there is one, and agree that something needs to be done. The quote I posted was a very extreme view and not really a practical solution. It did however provoke some thought and started an interesting debate about solutions. We all have common ground here - our trucks! It's too bad the folks in Washington can't find their common ground.
Early '65 D200 - NO! It doesn't have power windows-power door locks-5 way power seats-cruise control-power steering-power brakes..It's not a car, It's a Truck, a REAL TRUCK!

I agree John!! Let's get back to our trucks. We're not going to change anybody's mind on this forum so let's just move on and save the rhetoric for a different forum. Thanks. Mike

I'm actually pretty lucky. Here in New Mexico, we don't even have a vehicle inspection program. I grew up in Texas and I remember that they were very strict. Horn, tread depth, lights, no giant gaping holes in the floorboards (but officer I've NEVER fallen through! Yet...)

And no emissions testing either, except in the city of Albuquerque proper. Plus, any vehicle older then thirty years old is automatically exempt. You can get a special registration to for a "collector vehicle" or something like that..

Seriously, in many states, my truck would have been sent to the crusher years ago. I've been hanging on to it for years trying to save it, having only recently had the money to even begin restoring it..

So, I am grateful that at least in New Mexico, they're pretty lenient on us old-truck guys..

In my opinion, private property rights are sacred. Yes, we have a responsibility to not harm society with a vehicle that belches white smoke all the way down the block, but there is a middle ground of protecting individual rights and protecting collective rights. We all breathe the same air, drink the same water, am I right?
But these old trucks, what, some of us put like 150 miles a year on them I bet.. Not exactly a major source of pollution..

So hopefully they'll leave us alone to pursue our gearhead madness.. God bless America! :usa

You know, I remember reading an article about one of the first car crushing programs (to get "polluters" off the roads) I can remember in about 1989 or so.

At that time I had a bone stock 73 Challenger with a 2bbl 318 and a 1987 V-6 Camaro for the wife.

Curiosity drove me to take them both in to get "sniffed" by the smog tester.

The 73 come out beating the 87 by almost a factor of 2 on each test.

It isnt about pollution, it isnt about the ecosystem. It is about creating the appearance of doing something which MOST people will swallow without an instants hesitation in order to make themselves look good.
Of course, it doesnt hurt that this is an area where they can accomplish their goal and not tick off the majority of their voting base.

I received a letter about a week ago from the city about an inoperable vehicle on my property. I was dreading it and thought it would turn into some kind of battle between me and the city. The inspector wasn't answering his phone so today I left a message. A few minutes later he calls back and tells me all I have to do is pump up the tires and move the vehicle to a hard surface. I told him it is sitting on rocks not the grass and he said I can leave it where it is. He even commented that the car looked like it used to be a Hotrod. He seemed like a very reasonable guy and not someone who wants to rid the area of old cars. Now I just have to get some tires that will hold air.

Iowa is also a state that has no vehicle inspections.

okay, sorry for my part... i just don't like being called a democrat

far as the interior of bc, no smog tests and, unless ticketed by police, no inspections.

lower mainland/vancouver i don't think you can get insurance without aircare cert.

one thing that has changed for the worse recently here is that used cars were exempt from federal taxation, they have recently combined the two and now you have to pay full 12% tax on a used vehicle.

I always wondered if my '66 would be worse than my '93. Don't wanna pay the $40 to find out though.

Tinbasher, yours is typical of knee-jerk liberal talking points from Madcow, Olbergeek, and the other Lefty whiners on TV. Long on whining, nothing towards solutions, unless those solutions involve raising taxes on the eeeeeeevil rich...which, to the current regime, means anyone with a job.

Tell you what, just send 100% of your paycheck to Washington, DC, if you believe that Washington knows better than you on how to spend YOUR money. Go for it.

Always keep this basic premise of American politics in mind - Conservatives value individual freedoms and LESS government intrusion. Liberals believe that the capitalist system is wrong, and redistribution of wealth with large tax hikes somehow create jobs and protect freedom. To those who believe that there is no difference between Conservatives and Liberals, look at how they've voted in the last two Congressional sessions - straight party lines - except for the wishy-washy RINOs.

For you Conservatives and Independents, make sure to vote Tuesday.

For you Liberals, felons, (and the dead in Chicago, Houston, and Cleveland), you can vote, too. Remember, you can only vote ONE time, keep that in mind.

Tin, you seem to have a LOT to say about American politics for a Canadian.

Patrick, according to our canadian friend tinbasher, u and I have "no brain" and a very close friend of mine has "no spine".
I was wondering, does anybody know how much foreign aid the American people have gifted to canada over the yrs?
Along that line, Im sure canada's foreign aid to the rest of the world pales in comparison to the trillions the US has gifted away. If we spent it all on us, instead of ragheads and others around the globe, our economy wouldn't be broke either.

Amen, brother!

Oops, I guess I included religion here...you know, clinging to my guns and religion, as Il Duce Obummer said back when...!

Back to the truck thing...Guys, I guarantee it is NOT Conservatives that produce these bills that curtail our cherished freedoms. It is micromanaging Liberals that do this!!! Every time! And the more of these we vote out of office, and the more we hold the people we DO elect accountable for their actions, the better off we will ALL be as a nation! People have finally been awakened by the TRUE loss of liberties we have, courtesy of all of the things mentioned in the link I quoted earlier.

VOTE VOTE VOTE!!!

You have NO room to *#%^$ if you do not exercise your RIGHT to vote!
