Re: aftermarket carb for 318

Worry about the intake first. There are 2-4brl adapters if keeping the intake. I just did a 4brl swap on my LA318. The stock 4brl intake (1983) I used is heavy!!! Not as heavy as a Chevy inline six head, but close. Go aftermarket aluminum w/o EGR if you can. Lot easier to keep gaskets in place when ...

this baby is stiff

I've been driving my '62 3/4 4x4 for about a week and knew it was pretty stiff. I took it up a rocky trail today & about hit the roof a dozen times. Not much give in those springs. Hopefully it will get better as I add weight to the bed. New shocks might help. I have to say there is a world of diffe...

Re: Ghetto HEI

I left my timing at 8deg. Where did you set yours? I haven't run mine long enough to get an accurate mileage #, but about 12mpg so far. 3/4ton 4x4 w/ 4brl with mountain/city driving. What did you put the module in? A remote coil is about $15-30 (stock application would be a '76 Nova w/6cyl) and I di...

Giving props to search feature

I did something stupid, had problems, and then came here to see what was up. I did a search for alternator not charging and found the answer. I did a 4 brl intake & carb swap on my LA318 today. I missed bolting the voltage reg ground wire back to the intake. After a few minutes of tuning, went to ta...

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I have a single speed motor lined up. Now it won't rain again for 6 months.

Can't help you, but would like to here what you find. So the older LA318 oils through the shaft? I'm new to Mopar & haven't pulled mine apart.

wrong wiper motor

I have what I think is about a '68 wiper motor in my '62. I know it isn't the stock one due to wiring. Unless I'm missing something. My wiper switch has 3 prongs which matches wiring diagrams, so it should have 2 wires going to motor. My motor has 4 wires ending in 2 plugs which sorta matches a '68 ...

Re: question on clutches

I would stay hydraulic. It's no different than a brake system. Very reliable. Trucks usually had heavier clutches, so hyd helps your leg. I've driven both and mechanical requires more strength to push & hold. Not saying mechanical is hard, just saying not worth swapping.

Re: Newbie w/'62 W200

One last update & I'll let this thread fade. I finally took it out for a maiden voyage! Drove about 15 miles to buy a 318 off craigslist. The truck did very well. I'm surprised how easy it is to steer. Suspension is pretty stiff, but it is a 3/4 ton. Still having carb issues, but that is why I bough...

Thanks, PowerMan. I should have said Dodge. I'll check it over better. If the price is right, I'll grab the master & booster with it.

'83 4x4 front axle

I was in local yard & found a '83 3/4ton (maybe 1 ton) 4x4. I grabbed the 4brl intake (heavy!) & a few other parts. Didn't have time to do any measuring on the front axle. It would be nice to have disc brakes. Before I go back out there, would this be a good swap for my '62 W200 assuming same gear r...

Re: Ghetto HEI

"So you removed the voltage regulator as well?" If you mean the one from yard, yes. Then I realized the ignition box was the blue one, so I took it all. I'm still getting used to external regs with alternators. It does look crazy, but if it keeps working I'm happy. This is my offroader/daily driver,...

Ghetto HEI

Normally I wouldn't show off my hack jobs, but this turned out great. My '62 was running like crap & I was getting tired of points, so I went to salvage yard & grabbed the only electronic, non computer controlled distributor there. I got the ignition box, too. Went home & started looking it over. Si...

Re: flippin parts houses!

Yeah, I might try Pertronix if I can't find the parts in junkyard. Main reason I was aggravated was that I got points for my '66 Scout & '62 Studebaker recently. There are a lot more Dodges out there. Plus RockAuto is getting them from the same place that parts houses do. I do like the employees at ...

flippin parts houses!

I went to Oreillys to buy cap, rotor, & points for my LA318. Cap & rotor, yes. Points, no. Can't even order them. What? Went to Advance. $14 in 5 days. No thanks! Napa was already closed, so I don't know about them. Anybody else having this problem? Do I have to start ordering everything online? Roc...

Re: Newbie w/'62 W200

Finally got my side mirrors mounted & my better tires mounted. Only got to drive it 1/4 mile, but I can tell it has plenty of power. I'm used to a worn out 4 banger. Now I just have to get wipers working & go through brakes.

Re: flat cam...

I can't tell you what it sounds like, but a worn cam lobe would be more gradual than that. Listen to see what bank is making noise and pull the valve cover off. You can tell if one of the rockers is loose. May have to turn the engine over with a wrench a couple revs. A backed off rocker nut or pulle...

Re: Hacking frame

It would definitely be easier to start with a 4x4. Either sell yours, or get a chassis & do a cab swap. I used 4x4 lumber to span side to side. Only the front and rear are attached to frame. The third 4x4 is resting on the frame with the 2x's bolted to it. Material used is: 3- 4"x4"x8', 2-2x8x8', an...

Re: Newbie w/'62 W200

Thanks guys for info. I am very familiar with SM420 (chevy guy), but not NP420 so I'll do some research. All I can tell you is this has reverse to right & down. A different trans might explain why the tunnel cover is butchered. Update: I got the flatbed installed! Lot of fun, but I definitely won't ...
