Are the "shims" really just greased or Vaselined in place and not put on the studs? Looks like a problem waiting to happen to me.

I would definitely go with the spray in foam a on the walls that seals by far the best of anything out there, and will keep out snakes also. I have done the diesel fuel thing a few times and it does work, pour in about a quart in to the crankcase and run it to work and back or something, then drain it. I would not work the motor like pulling a trailer or anything but get it warmed up good then drain. Real bad engines with a lot of sludge...
