Re: Transmission is toasted...need ideas

I have seen at least one /6 to A-518 swap but I don't know how he did it. I think an adapter plate was fabricated.

The elegant solution would be an UltraBell, IF they made one for Slant Six. HINT, HINT.

Re: Any Perkins diesel guys?

Well, if the job holds, I'd say the Perkins is a big plus in favor of buying the truck. They are very dependable engines with good parts support. Not fast, but dependable, lots of torque, a little noisy.

They were used in a lot of forklifts and airport equipment.

Re: Possible Transmission rebuild~

Jack the vehicle up, and get a transmission jack underneath of it as per the manual.

A lift is great, or a grease pit, but it can be done with jackstands if you are careful.

DON"T work alone. Do get experienced help. That's what car clubs are for.

Re: Reasonable engine swap-63 crew /6 to ???

An air cooled engine means no heater or defroster, unless you want to rig a diesel burning heater. The oil does not provide good results in most cases. Factory air cooled vehicles had heat exchangers from the exhaust, but they never worked very well. South Wind or Eberspacher gas heaters (they could...

UltraBell for G/RG Engine (Slant Six)

I've been in contact with JW Performance Transmission about the idea of an UltraBell replacement automatic transmission bell housing to mate Slant Six (G or RG Engine) to 727 or 518 TorqueFlite Transmissions. The factory DID make a G/RG 727 as you probably know BUT they are getting scarce, and there...

Re: electronic ignition

The drag race guys like the optical Mallory setup. I don't. The sensor gets dusty and causes the ignition to quit. Cleaning it fixes it for a while, but it's a never ending battle. The Mopar setup is the best electronic ignition in the world. The resistor goes open once in a while, but they are chea...

Re: 1967 Dodge Camper Special - gas mileage !

A diesel will get better mileage but only with the right gears. Diesel conversions get expensive fast. My advice, get a magnum EFI 318 and the OD automatic with it if you want a mileage swap, even so, don't expect miracles. The wiring gets complicated but it can be done. In no case will you get the ...

Re: Anybody Seen a tool Chest like this??

Whoever made that bed was probably who made the ones for the ramp trucks Eastern had in the old days (early 60s).

We had the later ones when I joined in 1977, but the smaller fields still had some old equipment.

Stripping is the best way to go. I always used Rand-O-Strip but that seems to be no longer available. Either way wear a good mask with replaceable filters and a full face shield.

Re: Gears, making the difference

The problem is you need more gears, not just a lower one. On a manual setup, the top gear should be 1:1 and you should select the rear end ratio for highway driving, and then get the gears low enough to launch or pull what you want. That is easier said than done because outside of high dollar race t...

Re: Truck with many donor parts

I had an International Harvester Travelall with a 361 Dodge truck engine and Clark five speed transmission from a school bus, a nine inch Ford rear end and a laminated wood front bumper made from the pin blocks of junked pianos. All the fuel lines, most of the wire and as much else as we could get a...

Re: Another Toasted Alternator

The one wire setup is only any good for tractors and other applications where the alternator just charges the battery. There is a reason no production car has a One Wire. It is a good thing to learn to rebuild your own alternators. You need to have a puller, a press for bearings and a big soldering ...

Re: no back up light switch

IIRC the reverse pressure switch is used on GM transmissions. The TFs have an internal contact. Manuals have it on the shifter. New York State is AFAIK the first state to mandate backup lights. I think it is required for the 1967 model year and forward. They also mandated rear window defrosters on c...

Re: Pig Gear oil weight?

Rear end, or Hypoid Gear oil has an extreme pressure additive that stinks. It is a chemical related to Indole and Skatole, the stuff that makes primate excrement repellent to the human nose. Circle trackers sometimes call the removable part that carries the ring and pinion of a 9"F**d or the Chrysle...

Re: Transmission is toasted...need ideas

The TorqueFlite is the best thing about Mopar engineering. The 727 is the heavy duty three speed and what you want to keep. Any automatic transmission shop can rebuild them. One possible upgrade would be to put in an A518, the four speed version. I don't know if it would be possible without floorboa...

Re: Open exhaust ?_?

If you have a carbureted vehicle that runs properly with a muffler, and you take the muffler off, the fuel/air mixture will be way wrong. Rejetting the carb is a necessity. Same with open loop FI systems. Closed loop EFI will compensate within certain ranges. Past that you need to redo the firmware.

The Mopar electronic ignition is THE BEST distributor style ignition system there is. If I could get a Chevy distributor to take the Mopar reluctor and sensor coil I'd do it in a minute. Just carry one spare sensor and ignition box and a spare resistor at all times. Or a complete spare distributor, ...

Re: Reasonable engine swap-63 crew /6 to ???

You can get more power out of the slanty but you still have a 225 cubic engine. To put it bluntly the slanty is not enough engine for modern expectations in a 4WD truck this size. But a swap is going to be work. I like a diesel for 4WD trucks but these diesel swaps get really expensive. I think Ma M...

Keep the center bolt filter. I wish they still offered them. The center bolt filter is better because you can drop the filter and easily inspect it for debris, bearing shell rinds, crap and so forth. Hint, buy two canisters and bolts so you can drop one in a plastic pan and put the clean one on prom...

Re: LA 318 to Slant 6 swap

There are two variables here, the amount of horsepower you are actually going to use, and the specific fuel consumption, that is, the pounds of fuel per horsepower per hour your engine consumes. Putting in a slant six won't reduce the amount of horsepower you need to do a given job of driving your t...
