Re: The 383/ 400 vs 413/ 440 Sagga
Many years ago I had a '69 roadrunner with the 383/4sp. My best friend had a '68 GTX with the 440/727. His GTX was at least 700 pounds heavier, and my Runner was faster. The roadrunner was stripped down from the factory where as the GTX had loads of trim, insulation, center console, etc.. When he wr...

Rim/Tire sizes
I just noticed that the rims/tires on my 71 camper special are 16.5". Is this standard on most of your trucks? I just went through having to replace the rims on my suburban because nobody seems to make 16.5" tires anymore. Believe it or not I ended up finding some late model Dodge rims with the same...

Re: rebuilt Carter BBD, won't idle
If you have power brakes check your booster. I had the same problem, unhooked and plugged the vacuum line to the booster and the problem stopped. Had to have the booster rebuilt. This is my next step. I talked to a rebuild shop and he said it was highly unlikely that a worn shaft bushing would keep...

Re: rebuilt Carter BBD, won't idle
How much have you guys seen the re-bush and rebuilds go for? I have one quote for $83 to rebush and a rebuild including re-bush for $203, another rebuild inc re-bush for $170.

Re: Idles fast
Ok, that makes sense. I have a few emails out to see how much it will cost to re-bush my throttle shaft.
Good luck with yours.
Summit/Holley has rebuilt and tested BBD's for $185. I am hoping I don't have to go that route though.

Re: Idles fast
OK, I'm confused.
I rebuilt my BBD, and the thing won't idle. With the choke on it's fine, I can rev it up but it won't idle once the choke cam is kicked off. Everyone says vacuum leak. You have the opposite problem, and people are saying vacuum leak.

Re: rebuilt Carter BBD, won't idle
Thanks for the reply Joe. From your experience, do these symptoms sound like what you were dealing with? It seems to run fine on fast idle.

rebuilt Carter BBD, won't idle
I rebuilt the Carter BBD on my 318, but it won't idle. It runs strong with the choke on, pulls 20" vacuum @ high idle. As soon as I kick it down, it sputters and seems like it is out of gas and dies. Mixture screws are 1 1/4 turns out. I have tried looking for a vacuum leak but I can't keep it runni...

I'm no expert, and maybe I got a great deal on mine, but I wouldn't drop 6K on it. YMMV.

For shining up the trim, try some Mothers aluminum polish. I also had great results with stainless steel spray cleaner.

Re: THREE ON THE TREE
Probably need to adjust the shift linkage. Disconnect the linkage from the trans and make sure the lever has proper movement then go from there. I'm not familiar with the actual linkage, but it should be pretty evident. I had to do this with my floor shifter on my roadrunner after I had it out. A co...

Hmmm, now I'm wondering if my dual exhaust that dumps in front of the rear wheels is stock. I am meeting with the original owner this weekend over beers, so I'll know a lot more then. Does the hanger look stock?

Re: Holley 4160 Question
Maybe give the guy a call and tell him what is happening. You can also pinch off the gas line, run the carb out of gas and pull the float bowl and see what you find. I think you can still buy the float bowl gaskets individually for cheap.

Re: Holley 4160 Question
What is the history on the carb? I'd suspect a sticky needle/seat assembly. Possibly stripped threads in the float bowl where the seat assembly screws in. http://www.holley.com/data/products/pictures/medium6-506.jpg . The needle/seat is what controls the flow of gas into the bowl, so the problem has...

Re: scary sound
Checking the oil for metal is a good idea. Also smell the oil and see if it smells burnt. I had a similar noise on my suburban, which turned out to be a seized fan clutch. Thing sounded like a jet engine and it drove like crap. I was convinced it was the trany, but the trans guy said he thought it w...

Re: 1k RPM gentle acceleration backfire and stall (animation
Timing chain? From what I see, your timing is all over the place. Shouldn't you be at about 10 btdc at idle, and then it should advance (further btdc) from there under acceleration ? It's been years since I had a similar problem, but here is what I did; manually rotate the crank (using the balancer ...
