Re: Timing Chain Problems Help?
Yeah, I understand that guys but on the next crank rev, the cam mark is at 6 o'clock allright but the #1 piston is on the the end of the -exhaust- stroke and the intake is opening. BUT, the point is that because of the -dowel pin- it shouldnt be possible to install the cam sprocket a 1/2 REV off fro...

Timing Chain Problems Help?
Hi guys, really need some advice here. All my books say that the little diamond mark on the cam sprocket should be at 6 oclock and the mark on the crank sprocket at 12 oclock, as close together as possible, at TDC #1 fire. Right? Well, I am absolutley CERTAIN my engine is TDC etc etc but the timing ...

Re: Continued government control of our hobby.
I'm actually pretty lucky. Here in New Mexico, we don't even have a vehicle inspection program. I grew up in Texas and I remember that they were very strict. Horn, tread depth, lights, no giant gaping holes in the floorboards (but officer I've NEVER fallen through! Yet...) And no emissions testing e...

Cool hotair balloon this AM
This is not an uncommon sight in Albuquerque. Before I found my camera, he was directly over my backyard, and very very low, but he had hit the burners and was going straight up when I shot this. It was perfectly quiet and still, almost no wind, so he was floating sideways at maybe 2 miles per hour....

Re: Cross-References for a forged 383 balancer pre 71
I tend to nit-pick details of theory that may not translate into real-world benefits. me too I know exactly what you mean! Well, thanks guys for the info, I'm not too knowledgable specifically about Mopar balancers and it looks like it's not a big deal like I thought it was, but there are lot...

Re: Engine stumbles or bogs down when I accelerate
Check to see if that fuel is leaking out of the bowl-vent tube. If it is, you make have a stuck float Is the carb dry in the morning? If so, start it up and look to see where that gas is coming from when it first starts coming out. If it didnt leak before, and it does now, at the same time as your b...

Re: Cross-References for a forged 383 balancer pre 71
Thanks again guys, but here's a detail or two I was hoping to find out.. So.. Can I use a 440 balancer from -ANY- forged-crank 440, or does it have to be just like this one or what? (like pre '73)? The newer ones look different and have a different bolt patterns, and the one I have has been individu...

Re: 440 Oil Pan
Hmm, very interesting! So, the compressor...for the air brakes? Did it run off the engine itself? Is that the compressor you mean? That's interesting, as mine is a camper special, so I wonder if they used that oil pan for any largish truck that might have various options later in the assembly line, ...

Re: exhaust popping preventing high revs
check ignition too, worn points or bad advance can cause misfires too dirty carb can cause that, intake gasket leaks, bad gas, etc., also a soaked float (they are not supposed to absorb gas) or a sticking/dirty needle-to-seat, bad power-valve, who knows? ... Vacuum test, total timing, check the coil...

Re: 440 Oil Pan
This is interesting, on mine, (it is a front sump) the dipstick does not pass through the pan, but in the same general area, I see this threaded bung on the side of the pan with a square drive plug in it? An oil cooler port or something?? Is it just on mine? Its right on the side, under the dipstick...

Cross-References for a forged 383 balancer pre 71
Hey, so my balancer has a terrible, I mean bad, crack in the hub. Im lucky it didnt kill me the last time this motor ran... It is an early balancer, offset bolt pattern, for a forged crank 383. Thin, and heavy, with a very very thin rubber ring layer. My question is.. can i use a 440 balancer from t...
