I had this happen on my `71 and it was the steering box, what happened is the bearing were dry and the cage that holds the bearing broke so the bearing would lock on each other like a clutch then release.

I took a pair of those flex lines off a Sweptline I parted out a long time ago, it also had them at the transmission cooler lines at radiator. I figured they were custom made also. On H1 Hummers they do a similar set-up but braided stainless, they still fail due to cracking of the stainless hard lin...

I didn't, and it/Dodge Dana-60 fit right in the correct spot.
