Re: New Member,..Just bought a 66 W200

Here's another interesting shot,...this is all the crud I chiseled off the transfer case.
There was even more when I got to spraying it all down, but you get the picture...

Re: New Member,..Just bought a 66 W200

BUT,..the one bummer I did find was this bearing race. image.jpeg Corroded from sitting for decades. So,...I decided to replace the bearings. No one local had the clamshell puller so I couldn't borrow one,...had to get one sent. It's on it's way. I'm going to Mic the new bearings for thickness and a...

Re: New Member,..Just bought a 66 W200

BTW, here are the markings on the diff carrier. Looks like this is an original,...date code is right on for a 66 model year I'd say.

Re: New Member,..Just bought a 66 W200

After scraping I went and attached a brush, and then a rag, to the end of the all thread. I chucked it up in a Dewalt cordless drill and really cleaned the tubes. I used a whole case of CRC to get it all out. Dirty job, but now I know the differential will ride in a clean environment for the next fo...

Re: New Member,..Just bought a 66 W200

Here's another thing I did while I was waiting on the brake part. The axle tubes were full of grit...too much for my suspicious mind so I decided to clean them out. I dropped the differential gear and made a scraper out of a piece of quarter inch all thread by double nutting a fender washer to the e...

Re: New Member,..Just bought a 66 W200

Oh and,.. if someone is having a hard time finding brake adjusters, my local NAPA guy took an interest and matched mine up by visually checking an actual paper catalog (!). We found a perfect match.
Here's the NAPA box numbers if it helps anyone else...

Re: New Member,..Just bought a 66 W200

While waiting on the brakes, I decided to drop the oil pan and check things out. Glad I did because what I found was pretty gooey. Lot's of sludge in the pan, remember, this thing sat for decades. Here's a shot of the pan after I ran a putty knife through the bottom of it. The goop wouldn't run back...

Re: New Member,..Just bought a 66 W200

I've hit a snag on the brakes. The NAPA had all the hoses and cylinders, but there's one small fitting on the front that's a problem. The small brass fitting that goes between the hose and the cylinder has been cracked by someone getting strong on it in the dim past. I've got a friend looking for on...

Re: Cleaning axle tubes on Dana 60

But now I've got another problem. Inspecting the differential side carrier bearings I discovered this. This truck sat for decades. This is the result. image.jpeg Now I have to change these bearings. I know a bit about setting up gear sets so what I am going to do is get a new set of bearings and Mic...

Re: Cleaning axle tubes on Dana 60

Yes, that sounds very much like what I eventually did. I took a piece of 1/4 inch all thread I had laying around and double nutted a stout rag to it. Sprayed a copious amount of CRC Brake cleaner in there, inserted the all thread that was chucked up into a drill and spun away. I did this over and ov...

Re: Cleaning axle tubes on Dana 60

Whoo Hoo,..I got it out ! I looked online and saw where sometimes with older units you can pry the gear out without the spreader. Also I got a tip to replace the lower bearing cap bolts with long bolts about ten inches long. This held the big heavy gear assembly from falling out when it popped out o...

Re: Cleaning axle tubes on Dana 60

Yes, I think that's the only option. I made a tool out of a piece of all thread and double nutting a washer on the end. I ground down one side so I could stick it into the axle tube on the high side, and then lower it and scrape the gunk forward....and it worked. I got about a quarter cup of rust pa...

Cleaning axle tubes on Dana 60

Hey there, I've done a few other types of differentials but this is my first experience with a Dana 60. The others I did were transaxles (VW/Porsche) and older British cars. Totally different design. What I want to do is clean out the axle tubes on the rear housing. This truck sat for decades and th...

Re: New member in Kaintucky [Kentucky]

I have crummy internet out here in the hinterlands and resizing pictures is a major time hole. The way I've worked around it is by taking all my pictures with my old IPhone, and then sending them to myself in an Email from the phone. The IPhone asks if I want to send the picture "full size" or gives...

Re: New Member,..Just bought a 66 W200

Ok, so for today I got a lot done. Sorted the rest of the electrics, and got the rear brakes well on their way. Tomorrow I'll hit NAPA and get most of the stuff I need to get it back together. Till then I cleaned everything up and addressed the rear bearings. Sing to the tune of "Leavin' on a Jet Pl...

Re: New Member,..Just bought a 66 W200

The drums cleaned up really well.
I put them on a lathe and they're true, and don't appear to have ever been turned.
A little more clean up and they're good to go.

Re: New Member,..Just bought a 66 W200

Yes, Once I got it apart, I did notice the ingenious design of those cone shaped spacers. Nice work on the engineering end.
Those needed a little cleaning, and I took care to clear the slit too.

Re: New Member,..Just bought a 66 W200

Here's a shot of the brake linings....they're about the consistency of sharp cheddar cheese. Not only are they delaminating from the shoes,...they're crumbly, and readily fall apart when you pick at them with a screwdriver. Time, moisture, and oil have done a job on them. I actually drove this thing...

Re: New Member,..Just bought a 66 W200

The Big Nuts,...looks like Cletis or Homer just beat them "tight" with a hammer and chisel. No need for the lock tabs,...it's not like if this comes loose the whole axle falls out or anything..... It never ceases to amaze me.... Thanks guys for the tip about the reverse threaded drum being on the d...
