657 is the standard in the 61 year, ID by the last 3 numbers on the case. there are no coolant passages in the lower block( below the crank level), however, there are soft plugs higher up on the side of the block, rear of block also, these plugs sometimes leak with age. Check for your leak again, is it on the side , back or front. I’ve added a pic to my original post. Do...

You can access the inside from the cowl by removing the cowl cover and wiper linkages, you can reach your arm down to coat the inside with whatever you choose to use, though I can not recommend fiber glass unless you rust treat inside first

wide molding started in 65 and is the same when ordered with all years it was used through 68.

In general I agree with PWD, However, since the cable enters the case you will not be able to see the cable at the trans end, you should be able to hear it shift inside the case with a automotive stethoscope, or by ear ( last year of this application, only year with 2 cables ). first and reveres use same band inside the trans, so may only be a "detente" adjustment were the cable enters the trans. Trans service would be drop the pan and replace filter and lost fluid/gasket. I will assume the kickdown is hooked up and adjusted, has the carburetor been replaced since you got ...
