Sander
Sander
Plan to do a roller paint job on Old Blue this summer. Can anyone recommend a good sander for body work. Hopefully a one time job so a good one but not body shop quality and pricing please.
Thanks

I bought a Craftsman 5" rotary with varible speed control, it uses a hook and loop paper attachment it was a big help to me.
Also if you haven't seen this link it might help with the paint.

way to go......
cheap throw-away board sanders can be had for
around $30-40 at Harborfreight.
If you think you may be using it more than
just on the one truck/car buy a good one......
square 'palm' sanders can be ok for small areas
and corners, but any large flat panels need a
board sanders to get the 'waves' out......

Tom Good site Thanks. Were you able to wet sand with the orbital?
Jeffc. Are you talking about an electrical board sander? I have only hot air. No air for tools. Not sure my old back will let me do that much sanding by hand.
I expect to end up with a good looking 50 foot paint job as I am not a body and paint man. This is my first try. But it's a working Dodge never a trailer queen.
Thanks

I have never seen a electrical board sander (there maybe someone making one?) so air and hand are the only
board sanders out there......
Most orb type are also air....
Vibration electrical (palm sanders)
are the main ones out there
and can be used for body work, just not as
effective as the types above for panel work.
Electrical belt sanders and grinder/sanders should not be used for body work, too easy to put cuts in the
surface, then you have to work those out....
If I did not have air, my choice would be a palm
sander and hand board.
If you ever do buy a compressor, do not buy small,
bigger is better, nothing under 30gal 5hp is worth
s t unless your just using a nail gun.....
and (under 30gal)you will find yourself waiting for the commpressor to 'ketchup' all the time with most air tools....

Start with a cheap DA (dual action)sander from harbor frieght(picked up 2 of them, $15 each) and a roll of 80 grit paper, once you have a good cut on the old paint, switch to some 180 grit to knock out most of the sanding scratches. After that you could coat with some rattle can primer and color with what ever you want.

Many other old rigs, not sweptline related.
