What is this in my engine bay?
Howdy Guys,
Admittedly I'm new to fixing up old trucks but this thing with hose spigots on it has stumped me and my brother-in-law that actually knows something about engines. What is it?

It filters chicken feather dander out of the oil when you operate the truck in the vicinity of chicken farms.

Re: What is this in my engine bay?
The canister under it looks like a A/C filter drier. I don't know why it would have valves like that. Where do the other end of the hoses go?
Re: What is this in my engine bay?
Coolant filter or more likely a block heater.

I second the coolant filter.

Look to see what its hooked into. Block, Fuel Lines ETC. Does it have a 110/120 Ac plug on it. Take some better pictures from different angles.fosterfarm wrote:Pardon my ignorance but what are these and how would I determine which it is?EGroscup wrote:Coolant filter or more likely a block heater.

My W600 has a block heater which is similar looking, except for those valves.

Finally got to open the hood during the daylight hours. Here are some more pics:dodgeboykim wrote:Look to see what its hooked into. Block, Fuel Lines ETC. Does it have a 110/120 Ac plug on it. Take some better pictures from different angles.
Re: What is this in my engine bay?
Pictures still aren't clear as to what it attaches to. the hoses disappear at the alternator. It looks like a remote filter ( oil/ fuel). If your standing directly in front of the truck and look down between the radiator and fan do you see an oil filter sticking out just below and to the right of the water pump? A remote oil filter still doesn't explain the valves though unless they were just a means to an end.

Re: What is this in my engine bay?
My guess based on pic angles, appears there may be some T's at the water pump outlets. Seems to be a hose coming/going at a 90* there at the red arrows.
But at the green,...lot of fittings going on there making it a bit hard to tell. A pic from the blue arrow angle would help.
Not so sure how well the flow would work with a T though with flow wanting to take the path of least resistance. Could be another valve or restriction I guess, on the outlet/heater hose. I feel way out on a limb with that theory without more pics.

Re: What is this in my engine bay?
If its hooked into cooling system then its a coolant filter. Nothing more, Nothing less.

Re: What is this in my engine bay?
I saw a similar water filter on an early truck in a junkyard about 15 yrs ago, mounted on the firewall IIRC. Have pics somewhere. The valves are so you can unscrew the filter and change/clean it without draining all the fluid. Basic "isolation" plumbing concept.

Here's some more photos. Is this part needed? Should I just remove it?

Re: What is this in my engine bay?
Get it outta there! Totally not needed, ridiculously irrelevant and useless.
Re: What is this in my engine bay?
Definitly a coolant filter. Is your coolant really clean?
