Differential Questions

Post by wthatchsr »

66 D100 with 318 / 8 3/4 rear. After a nice run in the country last weekend, I have found that my pinion seal AND differential gasket are leaking quite badly. I am planning on pulling the differential this weekend, and would appreciate any advice, tips, what-to-look-out-for knowledge before I start ( How to physically handle removing, order of things, ect).

This forum is the best, and your advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Pull axles. Dont mix up sides. Remove drive shaft then third member to pull out and do repairs on bench and check it out thoroughly :thinking .

To remove third member. All nuts but a couple loose at top. Gently pry apart from housing. Oil will pour out. When oil stops, Remove last nuts and with a helper pry third member forward till clear of threaded studs. Have a floor cushion in case you drop it. Be careful.

If you do remove the third member, consider cutting a hole and tapping for a drain plug in the diff housing. It'll much easier to change out fluid

well, made a lot of progress before the rains came ( doing all this in back part of wood line ). Got trans seal replaces, pinion seal replaced, pumpkin gasket replace, wheel cylinders replaced. long day. But now for the bone head question...I am getting too old. Which way does the seal spring face? In toward gears or out towards wheel?

In toward the ring and pinion.

Its best to press those seals in. Tapping them in can sometimes cause those
seal springs to come off. If you have no way to press them in, you should take
some heavy grease and put it over the springs to help keep them from popping
off. :2cents ..... but the recommended method is to press them in. :Thumbsup

Finished up with ' My Mistress' tonight. Got the seals installed, axles back in and new brakes. Will bleed them tomorrow and then take a break before moving onto the next issue.
Just wanted to say thanks for the info the other night. I new better, but I was so tired that my brain when into doubt mode.

Anyway, thanks again.
