vent knob removal

Post by Shifty »

Hey everyone. I looked around and I found a little info on removing some of the knobs for the interior controls, but I'm still having trouble. I'm removing my dash and the left and right vent cables and knobs are whats holding me up. I can't for the life of me seem to get the knobs off. I didn't have success removing the others either, I just removed the separate little bracket on the bottom of the dash for now. Do these knobs come off? Or do I have to remove the whole cable? Seems like they should come of somehow but I have really gone at them and can't figure it out. Thanks for the help.

You have to unhook the cable at the vent. There is a nut on the back side of the dash you have to remove to pull the cable out from the front. :Thumbsup

maaaaaaan. I was really hoping I didn't have to do that. Getting to the vent on the passenger side is such a pain. Looks like I will have to pull the whole heater unit. I mean I was going to do all that anyway, but I just wanted to do it a little at a time. The screw that clamps the cable in on the driver side I couldn't break free yesterday. Nothing can be easy.

There is a guy on ebay that is selling the cables. The knobs have a collar in them with a set screw to make installation or replacement easy. He sells the knobs separate as well. At $25 a pop for just the knob, its hard to swallow. I'm going to experiment with making a simple removal tool that I have come up with in my mind. If it happens to work, I'll be sure to share.

The nut on the back side is 1/2" or 7/16........a small 90 degree open end should do the trick. :thinking

Pretty sure you can reach it if you remove the glove box liner. :Thumbsup

I actually have the dash hanging so that isn't an issue, I can get to the back of everything. But unhooking the cable from the vent itself isn't accessable without taking the heater box out. The cable and vent is sandwiched in between on the passenger side. As for the driver side, the screw that tightens the clamp on the cable housing is frozen. My plan for the whole dash removal was to leave the cables in place, and remove them as time and space allowed. I'm pretty sure I'm going to pull all the wiring out and instal a new ez wiring harness or something similar. Its a mess.
