Chassis colour?

Post by fireguyfire »

Going to get going on my 70 d100 restoration by removing the box first, sandblasting and painting the frame from the cab back; I will remove the rear end and go through it at the same time.
My chassis looks to be in great shape but I don't see any remnants of original paint on it; perhaps the top of the frame under the cab or box will show the paint.
Anyway, I'm assuming the frame would have been a chassis black from the factory; is that correct, and if so what sheen would the factory frame paint have had?
I've had good luck with POR 15 on other frame restorations I've done but it is quite a glossy paint.

I can't honestly say what they were. Mine was all "rusty" color. However, that being said I painted mine with Rustoleum black. I used the gloss paint. It really looked nice and still does. I know this isn't the answer you're looking for. But I say, paint it with a black that you will be happy with. I would "assume" that chassis black would be a great match "IF" they were painted when new. :thinking

Yeah... that is what I was thinking. My frame had NO paint on it and was just "rusty" from front to back. I wonder if Dodge had sprayed the frame with some type of... oil spray coating or similar coating when new, just to preserve that "new" look WHEN they were new on the car lot. :thinking

One I had in 1967 had a black frame. The paint mustn't have been very durable though.

I seem to remember some black paint on my 70 frame before I sanded it down.

Mine is black. I wouldn't call it gloss, but it does have a sheen. POR-15 is a great product, but it is not UV resistant. KBS coatings does produce a frame painting system that is UV resistant (https://www.kbs-coatings.com/BlackTop.html). I haven't used it as I'm also still in the planning stages.

Love the Rolling Stones reference...

I am using an SEM product in black on my frames. Tried it on my trailers and liked it so well that I'm doing my '68 Shorty and '67 WM300 with the same stuff. Lays down very nicely.

I did learn that you don't want to get it on anything unintended... tough to get it off.
