Gauges not working
Gauges not working
Hi I'm a new user and could use some help. I have a 65 d100 and am having problems with my fuel an temp gauges. When I got the truck neither worked. I grounded both gauges and they pegged out. So I replaced the temp sending unit and it still would not work. Moved on to the fuel sending unit and found that the float was full of full and did not get any readings from. It with my meter. So I replace the fuel unit with anew one. Would only read a quarter. Then one day while driving they both started to work but pegged out at an idle they would rise about a quarter, when rev they pegg out again. Checked out all wire connections and grounds. Any ideas?

It might be that the voltage limiter which is integral to the fuel gauge has
crapped out. You can do a site search on Voltage Limiter and come up with
instructions to make a replacement. I've done this on all my Sweptlines.

Having trouble finding the voltage limiter schematic you have mentioned, and would like to know where I can get one
Re: Gauges not working
Thanks for the info, can you tell me where I can get those limiters? Do you build and sell them?
Re: Gauges not working
Just looked on ebay and found a dc to dc 12 to 5v step down converter for 3 bucks. Do you think that will do the trick?
Re: Gauges not working
Maybe others can comment on this, as I built my own just like this:Randy wrote:Just looked on ebay and found a dc to dc 12 to 5v step down converter for 3 bucks. Do you think that will do the trick?

Its been a while, but I'm pretty sure I bought the 7808 & 7805 regulators from
Parts Express. These were riveted to a nice thick chunk of aluminum which
was mounted to the cab just behind the gauge cluster. This "stepped" the voltage
from 12v to 8v and then to 5v which is thought to be a bit safer. If you can use a
soldering iron, drill and a pop riveter its pretty easy.

Hey thanks lot for your help
Re: Gauges not working
I purchased and installed a 12v to 5v converter on Amazon. now have 5v to the fuel and temp gauge but neither are registering. grounded both gauges and the peg out. grounded both wires to sending units and they peg also. both sending units are new, what am I missing?. any help, don't have much hair left. thanks
Re: Gauges not working
did you ground the sender wire at each end at the sender (not just plug on to the sender)? if they are pegged when plugged on to the sender, the oms are not right to get the correct reading. ether you have the wrong senders or the senders are
shorted (grounded inside)
shorted (grounded inside)
Re: Gauges not working
Thanks for reply . grounded sender wires an Gauges to make sure gauges worked both pegged out. After I installed the voltage converter 12v to 5v the gauges register nothing all the way to the left

Re: Gauges not working
Can you post a picture of the back of the gauge cluster and how it is connected . If it has been that way since you bought it, maybe wiring by PO is not correct.
