gear reduction starter for 1968 w/ 440 and np435 std tranny
gear reduction starter for 1968 w/ 440 and np435 std tranny
I have rebuilt a 440 for a 1968 with a new process 435 manual tranny (formerly a 383 truck) the stock direct drive starter cannot turn the engine over. is there an aftermarket gear reduction starter available to direct bolt into this application? Also does anyone know a part number for a 12 inch clutch with a small 10 spline to fit the np435 tranny? thanks for any help.

Gear reduction option for the cast truck frame mounted bell housing is not available. Just recently there was a post regarding a good starter option available for those bell housings. And I have a 400 BB in a D500 and it turns over awesome. Your starter must be weak. The BB Truck starter for that bell housing has the same parts as the SB starter of that era(68 and older) Only the nose cone is different.

Re: gear reduction starter for 1968 w/ 440 and np435 std tra
thanks, I read the previous string on the gear reduction starter bur the part referenced only seemed to apply to 318LA and smaller although it only had 2 bolt holes instead of the 3 on the frame mount bell housings of the 318LAs. my big block starter only has the 2 holes for mounting but the geometry is very different than the 2 hole gear reductions starters used on the auto trannies. did that thread imply you could use a late model gear reduction starter on a 318LA with the frame mount bell housing (with the 3 holes for small block direct drive starters?) just curious because I have another 1968 w200 with the 318LA and the 3 hole direct drive I would not mind replacing with a better starter. is your d500 a manual transmission?

The starter does not bolt to the engine, so engine is irrelevant. It bolts to the bell housing and engages the flywheel. Can't put a 2 hole starter in a 3 hole bell.

Gear reduction starter flat out will not bolt to the cast iron frame mounted bell housing on either the Small Block/Slant six or BB bell housing.

A fresh rebuilt engine is a tad harder to turn over than one that's been in service. I would have that direct drive starter checked out/rebuilt. I'm assuming there is nothing wrong with the engine preventing it from cranking over.

I run that starter. The 2 holes line up with 2 of the 3 bell housing mounting holes and the 3rd is left open.
Re: gear reduction starter for 1968 w/ 440 and np435 std tra
Thanks for the feedback. I have attached a couple pictures one of the small-block bell housing that the previous string applies too. I will order one of the starters and try it with my 318 truck that several members are using already. on the small block bell housing the two holes are in-line with the starter gear which can be seen in the one picture of the 318LA with the bell housing with three bolts in it. The other pictures are of the BB starter and bell housing. The holes are off-set from the starter gear with two holes not in line with the gear (bigger fly wheel I think). I will keep researching, but wondered if anyone had found a gear reduction replacement for the big block frame mounted bell housing (with the off-set two hole mount). Thank you all for your time and input, I will post any info I get.

How did I ever start the freshly rebuilt from a factory Chrysler authorized re builder rebuilt to stock specs poly using the stock starter that had years of service on it. Must have been an anomaly. Maybe my starter was "special" .

Thanks Chillowack! I was raised in Port Alberni, you have a lot in common with driver from walnut freak, I I lived in Livermore for 12 years. I am Ot interested in grammar corrections or wise as remarks. Just solving the problem. I have been dong this since the 70s and might have some info or parts you need. Younger people with younger ideas might .... have good ideas to solve OLD problems. Just lookin for answers and clarity. I learned something already. Gettin a new stater for my 418la. And lookin forward to it. Than you to this that contributed. Hope to post again soon. Ps the 440 has 10:1 plus compression, flat top pistons with shaved heads, I have ordered a new direct drive starter but still have my doubts.

My 70 D 500 has the manual transmission with Cast iron frame mounted cross member. I still maintain a good direct drive starter should start your 440 with that compression. I base that on the same BB Direct drive starter was used on the 413 industrial engines in the C series Dodge trucks with air compressor, Power steering etc on the motor and they started just fine. Company I worked for 30 years had those trucks in the 70's and early 80's. The newer style starter that was posted is a nice way to go, Don't get me wrong. Maybe the company that produced the starter that fit the SB and SL 6 would already have the BB starter conversion in the works. Just a different nose cone/adapter needed.

Looks like someone could "hobcobble" together a starter that'd work......but rebuilding the current one would be more feasible in my opinion.
