W300 Oil pan for a 360LA, do they exist?
I've got a '72 360 that is all ready sitting in the frame of my 62'W300, and swapped in by the previous owner.
It has a center sump oil pan, and I am believing that I need a front sump pan to clear the front axle.
Is that correct? ARE there any applications that have an oil pan that will work with the 360?

I have a rear sump 360 pan,but no pickup tube.
I sold all of my sweptline trucks, except the invisible one. I just couldn't stand to see it go!

Would a Rear sump work on a Swepty?
I was under the impression that they were all front sump... or the 225 slant 6 I have is.. and the 67 318 Poly was as well... But that is the extent of my experience and knowledge...

A rear sump will work on a 2wd and may work on the W300. They were all front sump from the factory but there is quite a bit of room for different configurations. It is worth trying a rear sump rather than locating a front sump 360 pan, if there is such a thing.ChipolteOrangeD300 wrote:Would a Rear sump work on a Swepty?

Thank You. That is a good idea and likely a successful plan. I've been informed that the 360 is externally balanced, and needs balance weights on the flywheel... AND all Hydraulic clutch flywheels were off a 318 which was internally balanced...so there will be a massive balance problem.. and so I guess I will be looking for a new motor.. might just try and use a slant six although that may not have enough wheaties to get the job done easily..soopernaut wrote:A rear sump will work on a 2wd and may work on the W300. you can have your 318 flywheel rebalanced for the 360. I did this and it cost about $50 at the shop that did mine.

Oh Goodie!!! I had no idea. Can you tell me a bit more about how you went about such... Or is it common knowledge at most automotive machine shops?exline wrote:you can have your 318 flywheel rebalanced for the 360. I did this and it cost about $50 at the shop that did mine.

I went to the shop that normally balances driveshafts for me and they said that if I had a 360 flywheel to match the balance they could balance the 318 flywheel to match or if I had the specs for the balance on the 360 flywheel that would work too. I took them a large 143 tooth 360 flywheel and they balance a smaller 130 tooth 318 flywheel to work.

Excellent. Thank you! I now know enough to confidently go in the direction finding a balance shop, and get this issue resolved.

I am using a rear sump pan and matching pickup for a 98 5.9 magnum grand Cherokee on my 69 W200 with a 74 LA 360. Fits fine with plenty of axle clearance. Newer magnum style pan fits the older LA 360 as long as you use the 1 peace gasket that matches the pan not the 4 peace LA style gasket. Need to use the matching dipstick and tube also.
