If your wiring is of '71 vintage, you would need an alternator with two field wirefiredog wrote:The wires are stock it is the factory wires the green wire goes to the regulator the Black wire goes to the amp gauge and the red goes to ? i can not find the red on the print i will take photos today. connections. The "red" wire might possibly be an orange wire? You should review
a wiring diagram:

Re: Alternator and voltage problem
Orange is temp sensor which runs along same area.
Inside the cab you may have a black and red which hook to AMP gauge.

Read the ENTIRE THREAD at the link I've provided..... One of the posts makes referencefiredog wrote:I look at the wiring diagram no red or orange wire at the alternator? am i missing something ?
to an "amendment" to the '70/'71 Factory Service Manual which identifies another color
wire used for one of the field terminals. I'm not saying this is DEFINITELY your issue, but
it is worth seeing through.

Hi Firedog;
Sorry I didn't see your post sooner... See the "Third Topic" in my extensive post on electrical items here:

The diagram shows how the wiring works with either style of alternator and voltage regulator. It shows your bigger black ALT wire, and the green and red sense wires.

Re: Alternator and voltage problem
Its good to see you sorted it out and kept the stock style alternator. So many seem to just give up and jam on a G M style alternator cause its so much easier to do than just fix the problem.
Re: Alternator and voltage problem
i enjoy originality, keeps the character of the truck intact. original is beautiful. except when you have a seized 413 max wedge in your truck :/then you gotta do what you gotta do.dodgeboykim wrote:Its good to see you sorted it out and kept the stock style alternator. Re: Alternator and voltage problem
I used your wiring diagram and hooked everything up the same way in my truck, and now my battery is charging from the alternator and I dont have to leave it on a trickle charger every night. Thanks a bunch!!PwrWgnWalt wrote:Hi Firedog;
