Need more info such as:

What size are each of the wires? Where in the Heck are these wires?

Show us a picture..... or study the factory wiring diagram.....

If your wiring is of '71 vintage, you would need an alternator with two field wire
connections. The "red" wire might possibly be an orange wire? You should review
a wiring diagram:

Also, you should read :study through all the posts in this thread:
http://dodgesweptline.org/phorum/read.p ... 4#msg-2734

Let us know if some of this helps you.... :study :Thumbsup

Orange is temp sensor which runs along same area.

Inside the cab you may have a black and red which hook to AMP gauge.

Read the ENTIRE THREAD at the link I've provided..... One of the posts makes reference
to an "amendment" to the '70/'71 Factory Service Manual which identifies another color
wire used for one of the field terminals. I'm not saying this is DEFINITELY your issue, but
it is worth seeing through. :Thumbsup

Hi Firedog;
Sorry I didn't see your post sooner... See the "Third Topic" in my extensive post on electrical items here:

The diagram shows how the wiring works with either style of alternator and voltage regulator. It shows your bigger black ALT wire, and the green and red sense wires.

Its good to see you sorted it out and kept the stock style alternator. So many seem to just give up and jam on a G M style :shame alternator cause its so much easier to do than just fix :clap :dance the problem.

i enjoy originality, keeps the character of the truck intact. original is beautiful. except when you have a seized 413 max wedge in your truck :/then you gotta do what you gotta do.

I used your wiring diagram and hooked everything up the same way in my truck, and now my battery is charging from the alternator and I dont have to leave it on a trickle charger every night. Thanks a bunch!!
