I just built a 1958 Dodge 315 hemi, it’s the same way. Can’t get the bellhousing off till the flywheel comes off. What a pain.PwrWgnDrvr wrote: ↑Fri Jun 23, 2023 1:06 pmI had an earlier one in a 63. It had the usual 2 bolts on the valve cover. The big difference was a longer crank and block with the flywheel attached with thru bolts, the nut between the crank flange and block (behind the flywheel). PURE HELL to get apart. I slammed that *#%^ into the scrap load! (and the bell doesn't come off until the flywheel is off!)BigBlockTrucks wrote: ↑Fri Jun 23, 2023 12:47 pmDidn’t the earlier poly have a third bolt near the middle of the valve cover also?
You can’t say you drank all day if you didn’t start early in the morning.

If I want to remove the tranny from the engine, I need to remove the flywheel first? and then the tranny will come off. I haven't looked into it yet, but the references to it has me a bit concerned.

If what you have is that 70s vintage aluminum bell housing I had on my Dart 318/A833, then you would not need to pull the flywheel to either remove the motor alone or drop the trans and bell. It could have been a very smart way to get past that historic hassle with either the poly flywheel or the hydrobell with its mousehole for the crank, although I am no poly cognizenti and don't know about the flywheel/starter interface with that setup, but it is an intriguing idea.

It is not the aluminum bell.

The tranny is NOT connected to the engine! It is bolted to the bellhousing. The tranny unbolts and pulls rearward out of the bell.Ifster wrote: ↑Sat Jul 01, 2023 8:14 pmI'm confused on this.charleypete1957 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 29, 2023 6:53 amI just built a 1958 Dodge 315 hemi, it’s the same way. On the engine referenced above, the bell will not come off the engine until the flywheel has been unbolted from the crank.

Re: Just bought a 1958 jeep CJ5 with a Poly 318
The bellhousing shown in his picture that attaches the T-90 transmission to the poly 318 engine has a mechanical clutch linkage, not hydraulic. So I'm not certain as to whether the flywheel would have to come off first or not. This bell is cast iron but does not have crossmember mounts. Still not sure what bell connects a Mopar poly V8 engine to a transmission (T-90) that was not offered (to my knowledge) in a Mopar.PwrWgnDrvr wrote: ↑Sat Jul 01, 2023 10:10 pmOn the engine referenced above, the bell will not come off the engine until the flywheel has been unbolted from the crank.

The engine "referenced above" was the discussion about the early poly's, not the bell and engine in the jeep.
