Controlling Grease Gun Mess

Post by martincom »

I stumbled across the photos of the grease gun storage rack I fabricated a few years ago. It was just plain annoying the mess that would leak all over any place they were stored. I fabricated this rack from 1" x 1/8 square tube and some 1" flat. I utilized 3" Schedule 40 DWV pipe for the individual holders and PVC rain gutter to catch the leakage.

But don't you think they need labels by type of lubricant? :joker If you use any Krytox that one should be gold plated, don't you think?

They're all manual. Why no air driven guns?

I can usually tell what type of grease it is by the color.
I never do that much greasing at one time to remotely justify air powered, let alone a cordless. I purchased a 5 gallon pale of automotive grease 20 years ago and I'm sure it will outlast me.

Then you clearly need a color-code on the wall... Framed of course. :joker

Does "Anal Retentitve" have a hyphen? :study

Above clearly not, but it SHOULD, don't you think? :thinking

The truck I'm building will have at least 25, mostly because of the dump bed and the PTO shafts to the winch and hydraulic pump, although if I can find lifetime u-joints for the latter that total will be cut almost in half.

Yeah, and they all specify different grease blends. The John Deere tractor I just sold specified three different grease blends between the tractor and the implements. The outboard was another blend. The PWCs yet another. My business trucks required two different blends. I can't afford an air or cordless for every blend.

I am guessing you might be able to cut that in half with the "meets or exceeds" element of API specifications, but that's a lot of reading and still has its perils. Controlling seal swell with the correct compound is no joke.

I've been using NEO grease for just about ever in all but throwaway applications I haven't rebuilt yet. It's amazing on bicycle parts. I've never seen it separate. But it is $50 a tube.

But if you want REALLY expensive grease, as I said before, there's always Krytox. https://www.amazon.in/Krytox-GPL205-Gre ... B072Q8JLHH And yes, we used it by the bucket load at my last place of work.
