Actually, the sending unit repro I purchased from an eBay seller behaves the same. I haven't ran it down to empty yet, but at the 1/4 graduation, it 'll require approximately 11 gallons to fill it. So that would correspond with your sending unit's behavior. I was sure I set the two sending units side-by-side and compared them before I installed the repro, but now I'm questioning myself. Also, like yours, mine reads just beyond the full graduation when full.
My truck is back at the body shop getting some runs addressed on the inner cab roof panel. When it comes back, I was going to pull the sending unit again and measure the depth of the tank from the sending unit opening. I'm not so concerned about the accuracy of the gauge, though it would be nice, but more so about being able to utilize the rated capacity. If need be, I'll add some 5/16 steel tubing to the pickup tube to reach the bottom of the tank.
I suppose I could some length to the float arm, but I'm concerned about weight and how much the float can lift. I know when i was experimenting with different materials to dampen the sound of the float banging against the tank wall, it didn't take much to impact that. I ended up utilizing two O-rings wrapped length wise around the float and secured with tie-wraps.
Also, I re-read the service manual section on the evaporative control system. It is not a baffle inside the tank, but what they refer to as an air bleed tank. So it is a 1.4 gallon tank within the fuel tank. It has a small hole in it to allow for expanding fuel to enter, but small enough whereas you'd have to be teaspooning the fuel into the tank to fill it. The FSM specifically calls out the 1.4 gallon capacity of that inner air bleed tank.

What section in the FSM are you reading the info about tanks? I've looked all through mine and can't find anything about fuel tanks. Plenty of info under the "fuel" section about carburetors but nothing on fuel tanks and/or sending units.

It is in the addendum, which was a section added to the rear of the manual. It is also has service information on the two terminal field alternator and the electronic voltage regulator, for example.

Original owner of the truck bought the FSM at the same time as the truck in 70. Mine doesn't have the addendum. It ends with specifications and "tightening' values. Maybe later editions had the additional sections.

I'm confident that is the case. It was the same manual for 1969 - 1971. They addressed the later model year changes, such as the evaporative control system and solid state voltage regulator/alternator in the addendum.
The local dodge dealer here took on Honda in the mid '70s and it didn't sit well with Dodge Division. In a nut shell, they were told it was them or Honda. They chose Honda and lost the Dodge dealership. I had just graduated from high school at the time. I approached the parts & service manager and purchased all their Chrysler service and parts literature for $175. So I have service manuals from 1965 to 1976 and parts manual from 1936 - 1976. Along with service bulletins and other misc items.
It was a lot of money for a kid just out of high school. However, looking back and how I have used them over the years,it was one of the best investments I ever made.

Hi Guys--
Thanks for all of the '71 tank information! I've been told that the expansion tank is found in 1971 D100s only. There seems to be some disagreement about the inner tank's function. Some think that it is part of an early pollution control system and others think that it is a fuel expansion tank that accepts fuel as it expands when ambient temperature rises. For the record my '71 inner tank communicates with the fuel tank providing a place for fuel to go when a full gas tank is warmed during the day instead of pushing the fuel out to gas cap.

I see refence to the "FSM" and wondered what that was, then it occurred to me that FSM refers to the Factory Shop Manual. I have a FSM, does anyone know where I can get an addendum?

I can scan the pages in mine. However, with the manuals binding, it is difficult to get the page to lay flat and provide a clear scan. Sometimes the addendums were also released as service bulletins. I'll check them and see if there is something that would be a cleaner scan.

How about just buying a new reprint of the yr that includes the addendum?
Just looked at mine. It is actually called a "Supplement" and is noted on the binding separately from the main manual. It is about 100 pages long, including its own specifications and tightening reference sections.
Thumbing thru it, I saw that it includes complete servicing/disassembly guide for the NP445 trans. It also states that trans was available in all models.
Also, lugnuts and wheels are different in the last yr of production and are not to be intermixed. Earlier use a 60 degree cone and then it switched to 90 degree.

No bulletin. The addendum is about 100 pages. That's a bit too much to manually scan.

As far as I know they were not printed separately. The last printing of the 69-71 manual included it at the back.
