replacement behind seat fuel tank

Post by crewzer »

I have a "behind the seat" fuel tank that has too many pinholes to repair. No one seems to make Dodge replacements. Is there another brand vehicle that would have a tank that'd fit with minor modifications? My truck is a 1970 crew cab, if that makes a difference.

I have never really looked into this, but have you checked into looking at either a vintage Chev or Ford or even a NEWER Dodge pickup truck gas tanks? They do make repro tanks for those. Of course, you would have to make some measurements and maybe do some mods to make it work. Just a thought...

A number of folks seem to like to go with an aft mounted fuel tank that was originally from a later Mustang. Of course, this comes at the expense of the spare tire carrier. I frequently see folks seeking a replacement tank and finding a good used one on the Facebook 61-71 dodge sweptline shop and swap group or the Dodge Sweptline Buy, Sell, Trade or Auction group. I'd suggest a WTB post on both of those groups.

I looked at the LMC website, but they didn't have tank sizes listed (may have to call them). I found the Ford replacement tank (FDGT07) is close to my tank size, with the most notable difference being the fuel sending unit is near the middle, whereas my sending unit is on left side. I don't think that's a deal breaker. By the way, my tank measures 63.75" x 19.5" x 7". I'll check out the Facebook sites too.

I didn't google the tanks, but I bet someone that also carries those "repop" tanks would have dimensions of them. I think it was the Ford tank that said it was 18.5 gal. so that is what our trucks had (IF I'm not mistaken) during the earlier years. :salut

Since you're looking at at non-original tank, I'd look at a universal aftermarket tank:
