Heater and Indicator Questions

Should the indicator stalk on a '69 D100 have self cancelling? Mine does not. If so, is this a fixable problem? I would like to keep the original stalk.

My truck has an in cab heater box in the passenger foot well. The operators manual says there should be a water control valve in the engine compartment to allow the heater water to circulate. I assume you must be able to open and close it? Where exactly is this heater control valve and what does it look like (any one have a picture). Thanks for the assistance.

Your Temp. gauge should go to 0 when off, if that is what you are referring to. This is what I have on my '67 right at engine compartment firewall. :Thumbsup

In my 70 W200 the water control valve is inside the heater box in the cab.

Thanks for the replies. My manual specifically says the valve is in the engine compartment. Does anyone have a picture? Is it just installed like an in line filter? Just kind of hanging between two sections of heater hose or is it actually mounted to something?

Also wondering if my signal stalk should have auto cancel.

Take a look at your heater inside cab. Along the bottom is 2 or 3 screws with heads pointing down. Remove screws and the pull cover out and slide up. Look inside.

The manual is wrong.....wasn't updated from many yrs earlier. All 69's have the newer style heater with the valve inside the box, controlled by the upper slide lever on the dash. All sweptlines, all yrs, have cancelling turn signals. The nylon ears break off inside the column, then they don't cancel anymore. They break off individually, so for a period of time they will only cancel one direction. Its fixable, but takes a serious effort, especially on 69-71.

This is inside the heater box of my 68'.

Those two tubes are what stick out into the engine bay. If your pull cable marked "H" goes into the top of the heater box you should be able to see this valve through the little door of the box.

69 doesn't use pull cables.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I will check for the valve inside the cab.

My truck is a '67 except the engine and transmission (including the steering column) which are from a '69. I don't suppose anyone has done a rebuild of their indicator and posted it here? I did a search but didn't find anything but that doesn't mean it isn't here. Thanks again.

Yes. The one mounted on the steering column.

Yes, the turn signals would be self cancelling. If not, the plastic tangs are probably broke off the mechanism. The switch assembly is being reproduced and likely in China, as the quality is not so great. I purchased my D100 last May and the previous owner had just replaced the turn signal switch--again. I gathered it was the second or third one. Even at that, it did not "feel" right when I test drove the truck and didn't always cancel on the drive home. I disassembled it when I arrived at home. I don't recall exactly what I did, but it was the typical Chinese reproduction issues where they don't get things quite the right size. I had to do some tweaking with a file, add some washers for clearance, and I believe I had to ream something out a bit. It "feels" correct now and I didn't have any issues with it last summer/fall and I drove the truck a fair amount.

I just pulled mine out of my 1069 D100. The valve is indeed inside the heater box under the dash. Image.
The cable goes through the top of the heater box and attaches to the valve inside. Image
I got a new valve from Napa and put it inline with new hose. I used a plastic heater hose connector to go through the firewall. I had to grind down all the ridges on the connector but it worked perfect for me. My pictures are out of order 🤷‍♂️ But you can see where the cable goes through 51 years worth of dirt on top of my heater box and the other one just shows the heater core from my 69 D100.

not all had heater control in the heater box,this was a option; some have a valve in the water lines under the hood and some have the valve right were
the line comes off the water pump
