Buy the new planetary type from the magnum motors. Much less draw and faster crank speed. Plus about half the weight.

Any 3.9/5.2/5.9 Magnum starter will work to replace the Chrysler Gear Reduction style and is an excellent upgrade. You can use them as is or get the terminal relocation kit that someone markets. I've seen the relocation kit posted on various Mopar related pages. :thinking :salut

EDIT:
Magnum Engines produced from 1992 to 2003 or 4 ish in full size trucks, Dakotas, Durangos and B series Vans. Those are the ones I always grab at wreckers.

Read something I think on Sweptline.org about a conversion for the SB Hydraulic Bell Housing. Cant confirm if it was produced.

No, Magnum engine like the 90s Dakota or Ram with a 3.9 or 5.2. I just bought one for a 94 Dakota with 5.2. Try to get the Denso but, most are the same. Just buy one for one from your favorite parts store or online anywhere. You can get a high performance/torque one if you want to spend more money. Craig

Got it....I read about having to do some grinding before install....True or false ?
Also...Do I need the wiring relocation kit or does the kit just make the terminals easier to access ?
Thanks again !

Relocation kit is not necessary. As for grinding I have not had to do that. I retrofitted a Magnum 5.2 starter into an 83 W250 360 auto and another one into an 83 318 Ramcharger auto.. No grinding.

The hydrobell starter came from eBay, there was a guy building a different nose for the magnum type starter. Not sure if he is still making it.

Thanks John! Yes - I bought this starter on eBay and it mounts to 2 of the 3 original bolts on my Hydro bell. I don't know if they still make it, but you could contact them and ask. Cost was $150-$200
