Switching from a 225 to a 318 in my 69
Today I scored a 318 for my truck it came out from what the seller said an 84 Ram Charger. I currently have a 225 slant six with 3 on the tree ..will I be able to do a direct drop in or will i have to get a new transmission and driveline as well any info will be helpful

Re: Switching from a 225 to a 318 in my 69
I hope for your sake that the Ramcharger was a manual trans truck. I have a '69 drivetrain for sale: rebuildable 318 engine (stock bore, flywheel may be toast), bell and clutch linkage, NP435, with crossmembers, NP205 transfer case with crossmember, PTO, and linkages. I'm above Silicon Valley so it's within range of "come and get it." PM me with contact info and we'll talk.quickgraffix wrote: ↑Mon Sep 21, 2020 2:08 amToday I scored a 318 for my truck it came out from what the seller said an 84 Ram Charger. i went out to my shop and its has a torque converter on it so yes it came out of an automatic..i guess ill have to change it to a manual tranny flywheel
Re: Switching from a 225 to a 318 in my 69
Does the engine have a drilled crank for pilot bushing? You will also need motor mounts.

That's not the problem. It's the crankshaft. They drilled the hole for the pilot bushing on all engines, but didn't finish bore it on automatic transmission applications. The crankshaft won't accept a pilot bushing unless you pull it and have that hole finish bored.quickgraffix wrote: ↑Mon Sep 21, 2020 12:34 pmi went out to my shop and its has a torque converter on it so yes it came out of an automatic..i guess ill have to change it to a manual tranny flywheel

You won't necessarily need a crankshaft; you can have the one you've got bored for the pilot bushing. I've gone through that one with good success.quickgraffix wrote: ↑Mon Sep 21, 2020 3:32 pmso ill need motor mounts and a crankshaft too...i'm thinking about rebuilding the motor anyways so ill add a crank to my list

Re: Switching from a 225 to a 318 in my 69
I have not used one, but there is an adapter that is marketed to put a manual trans behind a SBM that was an automatic. It registers on the torque converter surface and drops down in size to a pilot bearing. The seller mentions shortening the input shaft but I would rather rough-bore the crank for clearance. It would not have to be well centered or smooth because it's the adapter that actually registers the input shaft and could be done with a hand-drill on an assembled engine if you are careful and moderately competent.

The "rough bore" on a crank is large enough to accept the tranny input shaft. Just not big enough for a pilot bushing.
I have a truck with a sealed ball bearing in the end of the crank like that. Got it at King Bearing locally about 30 yrs ago. Tack welded it to the crank to be sure it stayed put. No issues 200,000 miles later.
Also, NOT easy to drill a 3/4" plus hole in steel with a std hand drill w/o side handles or it being a right angle drill and most important - variable speed.
Done that one too.
