Replacement Carb Options for 383
It looks like I need to do something about the carb on my ‘67 D200 with the 383. I just can’t seem to get it to run consistently well; one moment it’ll idle pretty darn good, and the next it’ll sputter and cough. I’m thinking about either rebuilding the Carter AVS or perhaps swapping out for something that’s simple and easy to tune with a manual choke. Any recommendations out there? Thanks in advance!

Edelbrock 1405, easy to dial in, and pretty good mileage.

Re: Replacement Carb Options for 383
I'm a fan of the 650cfm Holley spreadbore with vacuum secondaries, model 4175, although I'd swap in the center hung float bowls to put in a secondary metering block and dump that stupid transfer tube. I don't know if they make them that way, but they should. I had one with a dual stage power valve that made acceleration incredibly smooth from 1500-5000 RPM. It would never dump if you tromped it either.ProLibertate wrote: ↑Sat Jul 11, 2020 12:29 amIt looks like I need to do something about the carb on my ‘67 D200 with the 383. AFB with manual choke. last forever and easy to service. very easy to change metering rods and jets to affect power band

Thanks for chiming in, Kaegi. I actually ended up buying an Edelbrock 1405 last night.

Yep, the Holley is for tinkerers. Once they're right though... I had a kit on mine where one could change the jets while the engine was running with a special screwdriver. Didn't like the plugs on the float bowls, but they did work.

Re: Replacement Carb Options for 383
I recall reading something about the Edelbrock requiring a throttle adapter. Can anyone confirm this?

Maybe this will help.

If not I could take a photo of mine. I put a 1405 Edelbrock on my 68' D100 with 318 engine and 727 auto.
Good luck,

I installed the 1405 on my former '68 adventurer (383) and used this adaptor.ProLibertate wrote: ↑Mon Jul 13, 2020 8:33 amI recall reading something about the Edelbrock requiring a throttle adapter. Can anyone confirm this?

Re: Replacement Carb Options for 383
Thank you all for your advice.
I got the 1405 installed last night and it started right up! I didn’t even have to make any adjustments to the idle/mixture screws. At first I couldn’t figure out why I was getting this loud sucking sound... turns out I forgot to install the included plug into the vacuum port on the back of the carburetor. Doh! It’s like my dad used to say: “If at first you don’t succeed, read the friggin’ instructions!”
Has anyone heard anything about the carb’s secondaries binding on the throat of the intake, necessitating a riser of some sort? It was mentioned on a Sweptline Facebook group.
Thanks again!
