Mini Starter Won't Engage.

Post by Donovan »

I just bought a rebuilt mini starter for my 69 D-100. After installing it, the new one spins away but doesn't do anything to start the truck.
Anybody have any advice before I pull it out? It was much tougher to install than I thought it would be.

sounds like the drive gear is not engaging the fly wheel. take it back to where you bought it.

This might work. Loosen bolts just enough to let starter move a bit and try once. Might be binding. If that doesn't work, Out it comes. :thinking

So, I took the starter out, (it came out much easier, so at least I got a system now) and bench tested it. I know, I should have done that first, but it works perfect on the bench.

Did u test the bendix drive (overrun clutch)? Just cuz the starter "runs", which u already knew it did while in the truck, doesn't mean it is functional.
Either the bendix is bad or the starter is not engaging the ringgear teeth.

It's fixed, I just didn't align it right before bolting it in, it was binding. Thanks for all of your help.
