Horn Location

Post by homeboymi »

I have two inexpensive horns on my 1968 Dodge D100. They are red plastic like the ones at Harbor Freight. I now have an original horn but don't know the location under the hood for it. Could anyone tell me where this horn is bolted on my truck?

I've seen both single and double factory horns in a few places, each with special hangar brackets to fit:
  1. One on each side hanging off the sides of the angle-iron shock supports,
  2. Two top and bottom on passenger's side of the radiator inside the front panel,
  3. Outside the front panel on one or both sides of the radiator.
So you'll have to look at the horn mounting brackt and the sheet metal in the engine compartment for clues. If you see a 3/8-NC rectangular nut welded to the front panel with an adjacent 1/4" hole for the tab on the bracket, that's likely the spot(s).

My '67 D100 factory double horns are mounted off the passenger side angle iron shock support with one fastener and nut that passes thru each of the horn brackets.

That is absolutely NOT a factory location, nor wiring. Easy to tell simply by observing the blue crimps on the spade connectors - that is NOT a factory terminal.

My '67 had the exact same setup with the horns on the shock brackes, sans crimps.

PwrWgnDrvr, then for all of us novice forum members where exactly is the factory mounting location? Just curious, as I might want to relocate my dual horns to that location in order to be as original as possible. Thanks.

Inside of core support, passenger side or hanging off the hood near the cowl.
Just looked thru a couple hundred of my pics of junkyard sweptlines and didn't find a one with the horns in that position.

The factory angles with the horns are longer than usual (I have a pair). The horns themselves are different too in that the mounting bracket is parallel to the face of the angle iron shock support. If you'd like photos, I can do that.

Pro tip: Check the relay before looking at anything else. Then tie the horn directly to the battery and see if it actually works.

Trucks in my yard.
70 D500. Horns with relay to right of radiator on backside of radiator support between Rad and inner fender.
1968 Fargo. Horns with relay to right of radiator on backside of radiator support between Rad and inner fender.
1968 Dodge. Horns with relay to right of radiator on backside of radiator support between Rad and inner fender.
1967 D300. Dual Horns with relay to right of radiator on backside of radiator support between Rad and inner fender.
1966 W200. Had dual horns on hood rear support with relay on drivers side under hood
1966D100. Had a single horn on hood rear support with relay on drivers side under hood. Evidence it did have a second horn at one time.
I have also removed dual horns with wiring harness from the hood of a 66 D series that are put away for my 66 W100.
My truck is younger than me.
