Dome Light Question

Post by Diggy »

Hello,

New owner of a base 225 1970 Dodge D100 - the truck had an empty socket in the dome light (and no cover), so I plugged in a bulb and it works, but how is this light controlled? There is no dome cover (lense), so not sure if it is supposed to have some sort of switch as part of the cover/lense, or is the light controlled in some other manner.

I can’t seem to shut it off other than pull the bulb.

Thanks for any guidance.

It depends upon the year. Up to 68, to my knowledge there were no door switches. 69+ had them. The earlier dome light was controlled by a switch that ran in a slot in the light fixture iteslf. In some cases, it was also controlled by the headlight switch. Rotate it clockwise until it clicks.

I had tried turning the headlight knob - it easily turns and clicks but does not appear to turn that dome light on or off.

The dome light provides great illumination - would love to get an answer so I could leave the bulb in.

61-69 has the switch in the dome light cover. 70-71 is controlled by door button switches and the headlight switch

The door switches simply ground the switch wire to the door, so if the switch is damaged and the wire touches metal the light will always be on.

For your consideration, I'm wiring mine with three sets of switches in parallel: door switches (available new), the headlight switch, or the switch on the fixture, with an LED bulb equivalent therein. My '69 also had a light under the dash, which was very handy. That fixture is the same as one finds lighting license plates; it just snaps into a hole.
