Numbers on the firewall?

Post by fireguyfire »

Was cleaning up the firewall of my 70 D100 cab today in anticipation of priming and paint.
The firewall has never been touched since new; I was cleaning an area of slight dirt and pitted my with a wire brush on my angle grinder, and when I was done I found this which was weird; clearly a #17 was painted here in the factory (the truck has been in the family since new)
Is this in fact a factory mark? If so, has anyone seen something like me this before?
I have seen companies label units like this.
Looks for opinions!

What are the last two digits of the VIN? I know that early Porsche would scrawl/stamp/note the last two or three digits of the VIN in an inconspicuous place on the panels so that when the fitment was done, and the panels were sent to paint they’d be able to match up with the right body. Maybe they had some sort of system like that at Dodge,…using the proposed VIN, or some other particular number just to keep track of the pieces as they moved through the paint and assembly line.

Now this is interesting, I will have to check the power wagon.

When I removed the riveted on vin plate off a CSS truck I found in a wrecking yard, I found yellow grease pencil notes written on the back of it. That's gotta be about the most inconspicuous spot on any vehicle!

My truck is a early 65 4 headlight Sweptline D100 factory v8 3 on the tree

I realized my truck had it when i was cleaning the firewall, it looked a lot like the picture above but i could see it had been painted on with red paint originally (my truck is factory blue) so i re-traced it with red paint. It is very very likely my truck had it from the factory, as all the grease pen writing is still there from the factory.
