Tips on shipping an NP435 trans
I haven't shipped anything as awkward and heavy. Any tips on strapping/packing? I believe I'll need to use a shipping company rather than a typical UPS/FedEx drop-off..... Sending mine to Novak.
Or find me a good usable NP435 and ship it to me!

I've sent engine blocks, transmissions and a relatively complete 1937 Dodge pickup basket-case on custom pallets I made all via Fastenal. It's easy to take a regular pallet and cut it down, drain the transmission, strap it down and cover it with either thick cardboard or heavy plastic sheeting. Never had an issue doing it this way. Even the cheap $6 Harbor Freight tarps work well.

I've purchased gasket sets in the past and they seem quite knowledgeable..... I think Fastenal will be my choice assuming all goes well. Not exceited about being truckless for another 4-6 weeks but hopefully this will be the 5th and final time of having the trans out.

Re: Tips on shipping an NP435 trans
I have two NP435 transmissions available for my project. One is a '68 and the other is a '69. Are they interchangeable? The splines are different, and so would be the clutch disc, but is that all? One would think swapping out a clutch disc wouldn't be a big deal, but there might be differences in thickness or some such. So is this a bolt-up conversion?
The Novak page says that the '62-68 NP435 is rarer than the '69+. So I'm assuming parts are less available for the earlier version. Are there any other substantive differences?

Is your 68 in good working order? Main difference is input spline and top cover

Re: Tips on shipping an NP435 trans
They're both fine. The '69 obviously has the provisions for the tailshaft rubber mount because that truck has the mechanical linkage. I don't need that on the '68 because of the hydraulic linkage bellhousing mounts. I'm doing a full construction, so that difference is no big deal. I'm just thinking of the availability of clutch discs and such. The gears and bearings in either box will probably last forever.wally426ci wrote: ↑Tue Mar 26, 2019 2:57 pmIs your 68 in good working order? Main difference is input spline and top cover

The '68 and '69 are not interchangeable. 10 spline vs 23 spline . input shaft bearings/housing different. You cannot swap clutch parts either.Wildergarten wrote: ↑Tue Mar 26, 2019 1:54 pmI have two NP435 transmissions available for my project. One is a '68 and the other is a '69. Thanks, then I can sell the '69 W200 setup in total. It's got a PTO too.

What does shipping cost for something that heavy? Gotta be a hundred pounds or more?

Re: Tips on shipping an NP435 trans
You have to ship "From" and "To" Fastenal stores that have the ability handle palletized loads (if you're using a pallet). Not all of their stores have that ability. My last shipment was a 5-speed transmission from the Los Angeles area to my home in Oregon. That was roughly $70. The 1937 Dodge pickup was on (2) custom-made (very large) pallets and went from Oregon to Maine for roughly $500.

Re: Tips on shipping an NP435 trans
OD? Rebuild? Both? I love the idea of OD for the NP435, but think their kit isn’t compatible with my earlier trans. But would a later trans bolt up to a poly 318?
Your best bet is to ship from a business address with a loading dock as suggested above. Residential pickup will only add time and a liftgate charge. Even if you have a forklift, you will pay a premium for a pickup in a residential area. The loading dock at work is great for this! If you can ship on work’s account you’ll definitely save a ton. FedEx freights listed rates seem outrageous until you realize everyone has some sort of substantially cheaper negotiated price. I hear greyhound ships bulky items...

Re: Tips on shipping an NP435 trans
Yes John, it was pretty much an entire pickup (missing a few pieces) but of course being in-pieces made it easier. The 2 pallets I made were odd shaped and long and Fastenal said they didn't care about shape and size as long as the load could be picked up by a forklift from the side of the load. The frame was cut in half and stacked, the bed sat above the frame and then the bed was filled with parts (above and below). The other pallet had the cab with parts inside, under and next to the body. After packing and supporting everything, I bought several tarps from Harbor Freight and fully wrapped each of the palletized loads and then stapled the tarps to the pallet. I finished up by running rope back and forth over everything. It took me awhile to make the pallets but more to pack everything to make the long trip without worry. All arrived well.

"frame cut in half"....that pretty much destroys any hope of originality.

Destroyed? How so? It was simply welded together. Besides, it wasn't a concours restoration. It was a street rod.

Re: Tips on shipping an NP435 trans
Originality was destroyed.
Only matters to anyone who cares about that detail.
Functionality is still intact after welding back together, just not originality.
The point is, if someone wants that frame in original condition, Fastenal won't work for shipping it.
That's all, just a clarification.
Otherwise, brilliant packing a shipping method.
