Here's a shot of the brake linings....they're about the consistency of sharp cheddar cheese. Not only are they delaminating from the shoes,...they're crumbly, and readily fall apart when you pick at them with a screwdriver.
Time, moisture, and oil have done a job on them.

I actually drove this thing from the seller's house to mine,...about a mile. I never really had to use the brakes, and thank goodness for that.

Yes, Once I got it apart, I did notice the ingenious design of those cone shaped spacers. Nice work on the engineering end.
Those needed a little cleaning, and I took care to clear the slit too.

The drums cleaned up really well.
I put them on a lathe and they're true, and don't appear to have ever been turned.
A little more clean up and they're good to go.

Here's my helper. Can't resist showing a shot of him hard at work.
He doesn't get much done,...but he works cheap.

Ok, so for today I got a lot done.
Sorted the rest of the electrics, and got the rear brakes well on their way.
Tomorrow I'll hit NAPA and get most of the stuff I need to get it back together.
Till then I cleaned everything up and addressed the rear bearings.

Sing to the tune of "Leavin' on a Jet Plane..."
Well, my bearings are packed,..and I'm ready to go...

Yea, I know,..ear worm of a song. Sorry about that, haha.

I've hit a snag on the brakes. The NAPA had all the hoses and cylinders, but there's one small fitting on the front that's a problem. The small brass fitting that goes between the hose and the cylinder has been cracked by someone getting strong on it in the dim past. I've got a friend looking for one right now, but it's a bummer because it's the only thing that keeps me from finishing the brakes.

While waiting on the brakes, I decided to drop the oil pan and check things out.
Glad I did because what I found was pretty gooey. Lot's of sludge in the pan, remember, this thing sat for decades.
Here's a shot of the pan after I ran a putty knife through the bottom of it. The goop wouldn't run back together,...

Oh and,.. if someone is having a hard time finding brake adjusters, my local NAPA guy took an interest and matched mine up by visually checking an actual paper catalog (!). We found a perfect match.
Here's the NAPA box numbers if it helps anyone else...

Here's another thing I did while I was waiting on the brake part.
The axle tubes were full of grit...too much for my suspicious mind so I decided to clean them out.
I dropped the differential gear and made a scraper out of a piece of quarter inch all thread by double nutting a fender washer to the end. I scraped all this rusty grit out of one tube....
I put the diff cover bolt in there for size comparison...

After scraping I went and attached a brush, and then a rag, to the end of the all thread.
I chucked it up in a Dewalt cordless drill and really cleaned the tubes.
I used a whole case of CRC to get it all out. Dirty job, but now I know the differential will ride in a clean environment for the next fourty years, haha.

BTW, here are the markings on the diff carrier. Looks like this is an original,...date code is right on for a 66 model year I'd say.

BUT,..the one bummer I did find was this bearing race.
image.jpeg
Corroded from sitting for decades. So,...I decided to replace the bearings. No one local had the clamshell puller so I couldn't borrow one,...had to get one sent. It's on it's way.
I'm going to Mic the new bearings for thickness and adjust shims accordingly to get me to the same set up as factory.
This rear had virtually zero wear on the crown and pinion,...it's a really low mileage truck it seems.

Here's another interesting shot,...this is all the crud I chiseled off the transfer case.
There was even more when I got to spraying it all down, but you get the picture...

Yeah.... chiseled is a very appropriate term. :banghead  It took me a lot
of work to get years of hardened grease/dirt off the t-case I'm using for my
W200. A wire brush on a drill just doesn't completely take the grime off.
That's quite a dust pan full you have there.
