Heat on all the time?

Post by stumblinhorse »

69 D100. Still going through the truck. Did all the easy stuff. Went back to 235/75/15 from the previous owners 34/11.50/15s and it is a joy to drive now! But seems like the heat is on all the time. Cables seem to be working and fan blows but, the heater box gets really warm. I see there is no flow control at the block, and hot coolant is flowing into the cab all the time. The bypass is in the core inside the cab? Is it just easier in summer to disconnect and recirculate the heater hoses or should I dig into the core to fix the bypass? Is this correct? Am I missing something? Any secrets or tips?

Thanks for the help!

A simple shut off valve in engine compartment? That is what I have.

There is a shutoff valve inside the heater box controlled by the "heat" cable. They are usually corroded or frozen in place and non functional after 50 yrs, so either dig into that, or mickey rig it under the hood.

Thanks! Thinking I can loop the 2 lines without issue.

I loop the lines in the summer and reconnect in the fall...
i cut into one hose and used a brass hose repair barb from the hardware store
my cable was working correctly but the original heater valve just did not seal tight enough

i thought about installing a single manual gate valve under the hood near the original remote valve,
but i was worried it would prevent the coolant from circulating through the rest of the system.
not sure how it would really be different from the original setup though...

I think this is my problem, the valve is not closing tight. I will loop the hoses this upcoming weekend. Thanks!

Is this the same for a 64 D100 with a model 86 heater?

I’m not sure. You’ll have to figure out the valve closure directlion

Gotcha, so it could be the 15 or the 16.
