Replacing Mechanical Oil Pressure Gauge Hose (68 D200 318)

Post by demliag »

I have a 68 D200 318, that has the stock mechanical oil pressure gauge. The rubber hose for it broke, and I was looking to replace it. I see the copper lines that Summit offers, but they are 1/8" line, and the factory gauge looks to have a 3/16" line at the end that goes into the gauge. Has anyone used some 1/8" copper line with a compression fitting to replace this line? I'm worried that it will leak if I try to do this.
I have read a few people say that they used a hose barb into the factory hose, and then the copper compression fitting from there to the sender, but it also seems like the barb might leak since the oil pressure gets above 40psi some times.

Thanks for any help.

The fitting that screws into the gauge is 3/8 28 tpi. They are not made anymore. The 3/8 fittings now being produced are 24tpi. It wont work. You will have to take it to a hydraulic shop and see if they can splice a new hose on for you.

Also the hoses being sold on ebay have the incorrect fitting for the gauge. I tried to explain it to them, but they refuse to accept it. So buyer beware, they do leak.

Hey Powerwagon54, you think I could take the fitting off the old original hose and put that on the 1/8" copper line? Seems like as long as the copper compression fitting that came with the 1/8" copper line seals up against the back of the gauge, and to the 3/8 28tpi fitting, then it shouldn't leak? That's the part I'm not sure about. What about just using a hose barb like I've seen others on here suggest? Is the pressure too high for that type of connection to not leak?
Thanks for your help. Hoping to get this thing on the road in the next few weeks, trying to sort out the last few gremlins.

The factory fitting is 3/16 not 1/8 inch. So that is not going to work. It takes a 3/16 ferulle to fit the gauge. Go to a hydraulic shop and see if they can reduce it down with fittings to use your 1/8 inch line.

i was able to find a really nice used hose but i'd imagine that won't last forever.

my dad used a bunch of fittings and was able to figure out a way to put a barbed hose fitting on it and them simply cut off the old hose end and clamped it on the barb fitting.

i think i have that adapter somewhere but my truck has been done now for 7 years. amazing how time slips by so easily.

I'm confused... Does the line thread onto the back of the gauge or is it a barbed fitting? Mine leaks right onto my foot, so I need to fix it before it gives me a skin disorder!

The line threads onto the back. The rubber hose usually fails where it is crimped

On 3 different trucks with the pressure gauge, I cut off the leaking hose ,cut off the compressed fitting around the tubes and used fuel rubber line and hose clamps on both ends of the factory fittings. 2 years and no leaks so far. :thinking :Thumbsup

That's called a ferrule and its crimped onto a barb. Same way as garden hoses and air hoses are constructed.
