Step #8 from the service manual: Install actuator rod nut, tighten snug and back off just enough to permit side movement without end play.

It is self centering when everything is assembled correctly.

Assemble just the valve body and blow air through the pressure hose hole and as you move the spool valve back and forth pay attention to where the valve is located at each function. By doing this you should be able to identify the centered position where air passes from the pressure hole through the return hole. Now that you know what the position looks like you can reassemble the valve and see if the spool valve is in the same place or does it need to move forward or backward in the housing to achieve that same look.

Hi.
Iam working in a body shop for about 25 years.
Iam no real mechanic.

If i have found the possion and reassemble the valve, the nut is tightened like yours instruction, what can i change on the spools position? If i think right its only the way the ball stud makes in its housing.

When you reassemble the valve you do so with the ball stud end as well to make an assembly. These are all of the parts that are important right now. You don't need the drag link at this point and you can hold it all together with your hands. The small spacer (1/4" washer) is where you can move things permanently. The valve really doesn't travel that far. A thicker spacer moves the valve forward toward the drag link in the housing and a thinner spacer moves it backward toward the pitman arm. Make sure you coat the inside of the valve body with power steering fluid and on all parts going inside it.

Ahhh.
If the spool is not in the position i have tested, i can change it with another washer.

I will try this tomorrow evening.

The system runs last summer, it must be something wrong assembled.

THANKS

There's a good chance it isn't yours. If you sent it to someone for repair they may have swapped it for one they had already serviced.

Re: Power assist NEED HELP !!!

Hello again.
Hours, days, weeks i have spent on this system.Iam tired. It makes me crazy.
Its also possible that iam to silly for those kind of work.

This evening i tryed the number with the air pressure.
Left and right position for the ram is clear. The middle position of the spool is a very very small grade and it feels like that there is a also a little bit of air in the ram ports.
In this position it is no problem to assamble it to the ball stud end.
The spool end with the big spacer holding on the valve body have got the same height.
I asembled the whole thing without the small washer.
Air pressure comes out of the right port for the ram.
Another try with the washer that was included. 2mm thick
Air pressure comes out of the left port.
Another try with a washer thats half thick.About 1mm.
Air pressure comes also through a ram port.

I have not disassembled the ball stud end.
My last option.
How much way can i move the ball stud in the housing?

When i have tryed the last time with the air i turned the wheel by hand/knee.
The air comes through the ram ports(not the same time )only with the way the ball stud makes in the housing forwards and backwards. No real steering. That is the way my steering wheel makes before the tires really react.

The ball stud assembly gets compressed by the screw ( service manual calls it "the actuating rod retainer") in the inner sleeve and only has one adjustment, tighten actuating rod retainer and back off one notch to prevent binding. I'm not surprised you felt air everywhere there are seals on the ends only. Fluid is always flowing through the valve if the engine is running the location of the spool determines if that flow is directed to the ram under presasure. Reduce your air pressure remember it operates between 25 and 75 psi. It helps to hold things together standing on end. It may require a 1.5 mm washer. Air should come through all the holes at about the same rate. Listen to the air passing through the valve and note the difference in sound between the positions. You might need to run a piece of wire through the valve housing and spool to clear a blockage.

Hello.
The ball stud.
That was one reason why i have remanufactured the system.
I must turn the the steering a big way to the left or to the right till the car knows what i want.
I can move the ball stud about 1cm in each direction in its housing.
Normal?

Once assembled correctly the ball stud shouldn't move forward or backward by hand in the inner sleeve. The inner sleeve will slide a bit in the outer sleeve.

In germany we say "hier ist der Hund wohl begraben".Direct translation: that could be a reason.
Next step: The ball stud end.

You may not have noticed but the spool has small holes drilled between the lands to allow fluid to pass, that's another reason you would feel air everywhere.

Hello.
Today with sunny warm weather i spent some time again on a table in my garden.

Disassemble and cleaning the ball stud end.
Nothing is missing and nothing was wrong assembled.
All the parts looks pretty good.No rust,no damage.

Today on my trick.
Silly or thinking to difficult?
Valve complete assambled and on my truck.
With the hands on the brake drum to turn it i can find a middle position where air goes thru return port.
The same way to the left and the right ram ports will blow the air.
So i think the spool is centered.
BUT there is no reaction at the pitman arm.Only the innere sleeve makes the way.
This is also the long way i must turn the steering wheel till the wheels react.
If i go now to my first bleeding steps or bleeding with engine running there was always a ram port under pressure and it turns itsself. To the left or to the right, however the spool was in position.

Hi.
I have never tested it.

The valve,spool,ball joint,its all correct.I think so.
I hope you will understand what i mean in my english.

Last summer before i started this action my problem was to much play in the steering.
I must turn a half round the steering wheel till the car reacts.
The steering gear box was dead.
New box,it was a little bit better.

And now with all parts remanufactured i have those problems.
I must also turn the steering wheel about a quarter to a half round till the wheels react.
But on this way the spool reacts.
So it is difficult to assemble the valve on the car with a spool position in the middle where oil/ air runs through the return port for a good bleeding.
