seat belt plastic cover removal

Is there an easy way to remove the plastic covers on the retractable seat belts. I can't get them move at all and I don't want to hack them up. The truck is a1971 W200. Thanks Ray

My thought would be to soak in hot water to soften and then remove. Follow up by blowing the water out of seat belt re tractor with air to dry and then warm that part up to completely dry out.
