Let's talk 70-71 383 4bbl air cleaners

Post by Creepjohnny »

Hey guys. So from the research on here and little info online, dodge trucks mainly came with 2bbls. Correct? Even though the original owner of my truck insists he factory ordered the 4bbl intake for his work truck. The intake # is 2951666. Which I've found is a mopar 70-71 intake. Either way, it's on there and working fine. so my main questions is about the air cleaner,
"IF" the truck came with a 4bbl, would it be a dual snorkel air cleaner? what original air cleaners are u guys running on 70-71 383s? Factory style air cleaners.
Posting a pic of what's on mine. The guy said he replaced the original but couldn't remember if it was a dual or single snorkel. My current cleaner looks like 66 mopar.
Any pics, info or advise will help.
Thanks everyone!

If it was a "special" order and not an "extra (optional) eqpt" order, then it would have a SERT sticker so stating.

It is a tag on the dr's side door post that identifies the additional options. :Thumbsup

I'll look for it. We're truck air cleaner different than cars as far as design or height?

For a 70-71 it would be on the VIN plate. The original owner could have ordered it from the dealer and it may not be on the VIN plate, but this would not be factory ordered.

It should look like that orange top one but with dual snorkles. 71 dual snorkle would have the breather hose going to directly to the driver's side snorkle (like the one in the photo but on the driver's side) and the other end of the breather going to the breather which would be correctly mounted on the right side valvecover. A 70 dual snorkle is different and the breather hose goes from the breather on the right side valvecover directly into the aircleaner body on the right side, the 70 hoseis about six inches long and has a right angle molded into it.

Soopernaut, so ur saying its possible to be a dealer installed 4bbl? But from the factory it would have a serial number or something on the vin plate?
Would this be the dual snorkle style? This 71 air cleaner shows the hose going from front driver snorkle to rear passenger valve cover. Or was this style snorkel for passenger cars and trucks were different?

If dealer installed it would be blank on the vin plate and would not be considered "factory" installed.

More or less. Anything that was not a standard option would have a SERT (Special Equipment Truck Release) number that was on a sticker 61-66 and on the data plate 67-71 if it was installed by the factory. (I think those years are correct.) If a dealer installed it there would not be any kind of verification unless the original paperwork from the dealer was in your possession. Many times people think a dealer installed option was a factory installed option because it was on the truck when it was sold new or added at the time of the sale.

Ok gotcha. I'm hoping the original owner has more paperwork on this thing. But either way I wanted it set up fairly correct. Thank u for the info! I'm gonna look on the data plate for any additional info

Honestly it really is not going to make the truck any more valuable if it was factory installed. Cool factor for sure. Its a truck. Personally I would prefer the 383 to have a 4 BBL over a 2BBL.
My truck is younger than me.

I agree on the 4bbl dodgeboy. I'm not too concerned with the value. Just trying to make it as on point and year correct as it should be. Appreciate all the info guys!

I put a dual snorkel on my 69 383, with an Edelbrock manifold and a later Carter 4-barrel. The cleaner is the earlier style (correct, I think, for 69), than the above with more oval snorkels. It's like the one in the below pics (not mine). I put a "383 FOUR BARREL" pie tin on it--but, not sure if that is correct, as I don't think 4-barrel trucks had pie-tins. Note the flat front for an A/C compressor, which it looks like you should have.

This should help. A web page devoted to Mopar air cleaner IDs (is the internet cool, or what?):

It's my P/S reservoir (no filter in there, that I know of). My P/S pump is a traditional hydraulic pump. Works great. Never seen one used for P/S in an automotive app. Very cool IMO, but they did take out my windshield washer bag to fit the reservoir. Pretty sure it was period, dealer-ish, installed. Some outfit in Los Angeles (still in business). I give them big points for getting the blue right :). Happy to post pics, etc, in another thread, if anyone is curious...
