poly motor question...

Post by abodyjoe »

quick question..

my 65 has a poly in it.. i assume its the original one but maybe it isn't...

i picked up a spare builder poly today. date on the block is 66

. my question is what years did they use a balancer on poly motors? the poly in my 65 has one but the 66 block does not. any idea what years used them and what years did not? will the motors interchange if i plan a swap? i assume they will but want to make sure...

oh one more question.. when did they start using the normal spin on oil filter?

.

the engine in my 65...

ok so its been suggested that manual trucks had no balancer/dampner and auto trucks did. is this true?

and if true can i easily put the balancer/dampner onto the engine that doesn't have one and stick it infront of my automatic trans and be good to go?

sorry for the stupid questions but i know nothing about poly motors..

The answer to the above question is:
Put it on and forget about it.

My 66 had the canister filter. I replaced it years ago with the spin-on type. Easy to do. Just get that "part" between the block and new filter. Just a bolt on adapter the factory used.

My 66 also has a balancer (NP435) so maybe the engines that had the manual got a balancer and engines with the automatic didn't. Have really no idea.

i put the spin on filter on my 65. someone on facebook said i needed some kind of different reliefe valve under the one main cap because the spin on filter runs at a different DP then the canister style. says the spin on won't filter anything because it will go into bypass mode.. any truth to that?

Never heard this and have no idea if true or not.

There is some good poly balancer info on the DTA forum. Read down this thread, best information in the last few posts:. http://dodgesweptline.org/phorum/read.php?2,14462

For what it's worth, I've never swapped a canister for a spin on on a poly, but I have on other engines of the same vintage, and nothing was required but the screw on adapter.
