Carter 1bbl rebuild/ exhaust manifold replacement

Post by BabyBlueUti »

I've got a kit on the way to rebuild the "Ball and Ball" 1 bbl Carter carb on my 68 225. Anybody done this recently enough to give me some tips on how to proceed to be successful. I'm also changing out the exhaust manifold at the same time. What are the pitfalls I should look out for. from my vision, it looks like the manifolds are welded together by rust and heat. the old exhaust manifold is full of broken sections and lots of deep corrosion near the head. Any info is helpful.

Pay close attention to the instructions in the jiffy kit you ordered. :2cents
They're not difficult to rebuild. One key to success is to make sure the
insides of the carb are as clean as possible.

Do you soak your carb in anything before you do the rebuild or just use sprays?

Make sure the ball bearings are in the correct positions. Soak if you have a lot of build -up. :Thumbsup

For me, it depends on how gummed up the insides are. I've used gumout
on some and Macs Carb Cleaner [NAPA] on ones that were worse. :2cents :Thumbsup

Got a replacement manifold from Pull a Part, media blasted it and cleaned the engine for paint and noticed the new manifold has ANOTHER hairline crack. (sigh) $80 to get it welded and planed. I can't decide whether to do that or just buy a new manifold. Any thoughts?
