Heater temp control ?
Heater temp control ?
I just picked up a 65 d100. Heat works and all (will cook ya right out of the cab) but I don't really have any control over the temp. Previous owner put a valve in one of the heater hoses (application unknown) with a choke cable hooked to it. It doesn't really move freely.
I was wondering if there was a place where I could pick up the correct parts to operated this correctly.
Anyone have a picture of there the temp setting knob is supposed to be mounted? How about a picture of what the control valve looks like?
One other question. Is the damper to switch between heat at the floor and defroster supposed to me a manual thing or is there supposed to be a cable running to it ? Right now I have to reach under the dash and change it like that. If it's supposed to have a cable where is that supposed to mount?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Heater temp control ?
It all depends on which heater u have. The usual heater has a valve buried inside near the core that is adjusted with a cable. Often it is too corroded to move. Defrost is usually also controlled by a cable. Both mounted on the dash, lower center.

Interesting. Lower dash? Mounted in the dash or on a plate under the dash?
I have a service manual on the way. Hopefully that will show it.
Does anyone sell new cables? Or do I have to find used ones?

Have a look at heater types at the link.
Somewhere in '66 or '67, there was a three cable bracket
added to the bottom of the Sweptline dashboards. Your
truck does not appear to have it. I see the blower switch
in your photo.... is there a "H" or "D" knob/cable further
to the right on the dash? I've redone a couple of the Model 86
heater boxes with new cores and valves. The original style
valve with the long hose end isn't available new to my knowledge.
I used a valve with two smaller ends and "spliced" a long
piece of flanged copper heater pipe to run through the firewall.
Perhaps your blower switch is the push/pull style which incorporates
the heater/defrost lever?

Re: Heater temp control ?
I'm not home right now so I can't look to see what I actually have. I'll have to look tonight when I get home (8pmish).
The bower motor knob Pulls out two notches. One for low and o e for high speed. I wasn't sure if all my controls belonged in the dash or if there used to be a plate under the dash that someone removed to put the radio under the dash.
Not sure if there was another knob past the bower motor one. I'll look at hat when I get home too.
All I have is my phone right now and the pictures in that link are hard to see on this thing.

Here's a thread on a 68 dash. Might give you an idea of where things go.

I have our 65 heater assy removed as we speak. the contol valve is actuated by a cable, running into the box. valve is on the end of the heater core.
Re: Heater temp control ?
I replaced my valve from one I picked up from NAPA. The valve was of course plastic now, but has been great with no problems. the temp control is just dictated by how much you pull the valve out.....
