Bell housing and transmission compatability

Post by Wrekkinshop »

Hey I need some input I've read a lot of posts on the subject but haven't been able to find a straightforward answer. I have a 63 d100. The bell housing mounts directly to the frame. It had a slant six with a 10" clutch. I built a complete slant six from an 81 d150. It had a bell housing that does not mount to the frame and also an 11" clutch. The 81 tranny is also a 23 splined input shaft. If I use the 63 bell housing can I use the 81 tranny with a 10" clutch? Or is there a way to mount the 81 bell house to my 63 frame? What are my options here? I'd like to go that route as it is an OD tranny. Thanks!

You will need to:
1)Use the original cross member mounted Slant 6 bell housing
2)Use the flywheel that is original to this bell housing
3)Measure the flange on the crank shaft. It very well may
be too large for the early flywheel to fit over..... in which
case you'll have to have the flywheel drilled.
4)Go to http://www.hrclutch.com and buy a new 10 spline disc, pressure
plate, throw out bearing and input shaft pilot bushing.
5)Use the original 3 bolt starter

Thank you very much! Is that what I'd need to mount the 81' of tranny or am I stuck with the 63' tranny?

I am having a tough time finding a 10" 10 spline clutch assy for this thing.

I have a flywheel that is drilled for both the 10 and 11 inch clutch.

I wonder why it had the 10"? Cost reduction? Is there an advantage to running a smaller clutch?

They'll get you set up correctly. I'll just about guarantee you that your
local parts stores won't be able to find one.... or will come up with the
23 spline parts by mistake. :shame :2cents

What about balance on the flywheel? Didn't Chrysler go to external balance on slant six in the late 70's.

Yeah, I had the 81 motor completely balanced, so I took both flywheels to the machine shop and told them to blalance the 63 the same as the 81, hope it works haha

Update, the 81 engine is not really compatable with the older bel housing, since the later engine has the oil pickup in the back the oil pan hump is in the back and the low starter will not fit, I used a portapower to indent the oil pan about 4" to get the starter to fit, cranked it over by hand and can't hear anything hitting or grinding, I'm too invested in this engine to not use it....

Did you not have the original 61 engine to get pan/pump off of? Or do you not have the crossmember from the 81 truck?

No 81 xmember. I have 63 engine but the dipstick on the 81 goes through the pan and the 63 goes through the block

Crushing the pan by 4" changed the volume at the calibrated level of the dipstick, so be sure to factor that in.
