Steering gearbox question

I am looking at swapping out the manual steering gearbox in my sons 69 adventurer and I see there were 2 types originally available; a Saginaw, and another type. The only difference I can see is the worm shaft splines seen different on the 2 boxes where they connect onto the steering shaft.
I am assuming the steering shafts were all the same so I am wondering if you could interchange the 2 types of steering gearboxes if you also transferred over the rag joint connector that attaches the gearbox to the end of the steering shaft with 4 bolts?
